Helga, the queen of the joint, accepts a wager with "New Deck", who is in love with her, that she cannot seduce Miles Norton, a stranger in their mining town. After he roughly rejects her offer of a drink, a drunken miner gets into a brawl with him. Norton apparently kills the drunk, whose girlfriend then shoots him. While Helga nurses Norton back to health, they fall in love. He receives a letter from his wife informing him that he has been proven innocent of a murder charge. He tries to rob the joint but is caught. Helga rescues him from the rope and agrees to marry "New Deck."

Peter T. Dodd has a rich uncle, Peter J. Dodd, who has promised him $50,000 to start a "clean" business, and is deemed by the uncle's lawyer, Phineas Grey, to be a "good, clean, moral, upright young man". Peter, who is not really very upright, wants to use the money to stage a musical, starring a beautiful young girl he just met. He pretends to want to invest the money in his friend's father's soap factory, so Grey gives him $10,000. But Grey and his nosy stenographer are highly suspicious, especially after seeing Peter's name on a show poster: "P.T. Dodd presents June Wellington in his latest musical comedy success, The Blue Goose."
