Bridging the gap : elusive explosions in the local universe by Mansi M Kasliwal( )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For centuries, we have known that our dynamic universe is adorned by cosmic fireworks: energetic and ephemeral beacons of light from a single star that are a million (nova) to a billion (supernova) times brighter than our sun. However, it had been an age-old conundrum that the brightest nova is approximately 1000 times fainter than the faintest supernova; why should nature leave such a wide "gap"? In search of an answer, I undertook three systematic surveys for my thesis. Since I was looking for transients fainter, faster and rarer than supernovae, I focused my search on galaxies in the local universe. We now have convincing evidence of multiple, distinct populations of rare transients bridging this "gap". Perhaps, we are witnessing new stellar physics --- shell detonations in ultra-compact white dwarf binaries, electron-capture supernovae, white dwarfs collapsing into neutron stars and birth of black-holes. A small number of intensively followed-up discoveries of elusive transients sets the stage for population studies with the upcoming "Large Synoptic Survey Telescope". This effort works towards building a complete inventory of transients in the local universe (d <200 Mpc). It better prepares us for the search for potential electromagnetic counterparts to events in the emerging fields of gravitational wave, neutrino and ultra high energy cosmic ray astronomy as these experiments are also limited to the local universe."
Solar system small-body demographics with the Palomar Transient Factory survey by Adam Waszczak( )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Observational studies of our solar system's small-body populations (asteroids and comets) offer insight into the history of our planetary system, as these minor planets represent the left-over building blocks from its formation. The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) survey began in 2009 as the latest wide-field sky-survey program to be conducted on the 1.2-meter Samuel Oschin telescope at Palomar Observatory. Though its main science program has been the discovery of high-energy extragalactic sources (such as supernovae), during its first five years PTF has collected nearly five million observations of over half a million unique solar system small bodies. This thesis begins to analyze this vast data set to address key population-level science topics, including: the detection rates of rare main-belt comets and small near-Earth asteroids, the spin and shape properties of asteroids as inferred from their lightcurves, the applicability of this visible light data to the interpretation of ultraviolet asteroid observations, and a comparison of the physical properties of main-belt and Jovian Trojan asteroids. Future sky-surveys would benefit from application of the analytical techniques presented herein, which include novel modeling methods and unique applications of machine-learning classification. The PTF asteroid small-body data produced in the course of this thesis work should remain a fertile source of solar system science and discovery for years to come

Gamma-ray bursts: the brightest explosions in the universe by S. R Kulkarni( Visual )

Gamma ray bursts : dying cries from the deep universe by S. R Kulkarni( Visual )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Lecture on the sources of gamma-rays, the bursters which appear to be isotropic and yet inhomogeneously distributed around us, thus requiring them to be either local to our Galaxy or at cosmological distances. The speaker presents evidence that decisively demonstrates that at least one burster is located at a cosmological distance and observations of several including the measurement of their size and super-luminal expansion and deceleration. The cause or origin of the bursts are unknown but widely speculated to be the death of some kind of stars
ULTRASAT : Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite : unveiling the dynamic ultraviolet sky by California Institute of Technology( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"ULTRASAT (Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite) is a proposed astronomical satellite mission whose wide-angle UV telescope will detect and monitor transient astrophysical phenomena in the near-ultraviolet spectral region. ULTRASAT will observe a large patch of sky, more than 200 square degrees, alternating every six months between the southern and northern hemisphere. The satellite will orbit the Earth from an altitude of about 300 km above the geosynchronous orbit, getting a 'ride' as a secondary payload in the fairing of the rocket carrying a communications satellite. Upon detection of a transient event, ULTRASAT will provide alerts to other ground-based and space telescopes to be directed to the source for further observation of the event in other wavelength bands. A joint American-Israeli proposal for this project was submitted to NASA by a team from Caltech/JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), the Weizmann Institute of Science and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The Israeli contribution will be funded by the Israel Space Agency and launch is expected before 2021"--
