The spoils of freedom : psychoanalysis and feminism after the fall of socialism by Renata Salecl( )

21 editions published between 1994 and 2002 in English and held by 2,617 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The rise of nationalist, racist and anti-feminist ideologies is one of the most frightening repercussions of the collapse of socialism. Using psychoanalytic theories of fantasy to investigate why such extremist ideologies have taken hold, Renata Salecl argues that the major social and political changes in post-communist Eastern Europe require a radical re-evaluation of notions of liberal theories of democracy. In doing so she offers a new approach to human rights and feminism grounded in her own active partipation in the struggles, first against communism and now against nationalism and anti-feminism

On anxiety by Renata Salecl( Book )

17 editions published between 2004 and 2009 in 3 languages and held by 467 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"We frequently hear that we live in an age of anxiety, from "therapy culture," the Atkins diet and child anti-depressants to gun culture and weapons of mass destruction. While Hollywood regularly cashes in on teenage anxiety through its Scream franchise, pharmaceutical companies churn out new drugs such as Paxil to combat newly diagnosed anxieties." "On Anxiety takes a psychological plunge behind the scenes of our panic-stricken culture and into anxious minds, asking who and what is responsible. Putting anxiety on the couch, Renata Salecl asks some much-needed questions: Is anxiety about the absence of authority or too much of it? Do the media report anxiety or create it? Are drugs a cure for anxiety or its cause? Is anxiety about being yourself or someone else, and is anxiety really the ultimate obstacle to happiness?" "Drawing on examples from film such as the X Files and Cyrano de Bergerac, drugs used on soldiers to combat anxiety, the anxieties of love and motherhood, and fake Holocaust memoirs, Renata Salecl argues that what really produces anxiety is the attempt to get rid of it." "On Anxiety is essential reading for anyone interested in philosophy, psychology and the cultural phenomenon of anxiety today."--Jacket
Gaze and voice as love objects by Renata Salecl( Book )

14 editions published between 1996 and 2005 in English and held by 463 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first detailed Lacanian elaboration of this topic, Gaze and Voice as Love Objects examines the status of gaze, voice, and love in philosophy from Plato to Kant, in ideology from early Christianity to contemporary cynicism, in music from Hildegard of Bingen to Richard Wagner, in literature from Edith Wharton's Age of Innocence to Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, and in cinema from Michael Powell's Peeping Tom to Kieslowski's A Short Film on Love. Throughout, the contributors seek to show that the conflict between the sexes is the site of a larger battle over the destiny of modernity. Approaching its topic with utter disregard for predominant multiculturalist and deconstructionist commonplaces, and with insights into the underlying target of racist and sexist violence, this book offers surprising revelations into the nature of an ancient enigma - love

4 editions published in 2014 in German and Undetermined and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
