Sturtevant : double trouble by Peter Eleey( Book )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Known for her early repetitions of the work of her contemporaries including Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol, Elaine Sturtevant (1924-1914) turned the visual logic of Pop art back on itself, using Duchamps model of the readymade to probe uncomfortably at the workings of art history in real time. Yet the aspect of her work that allowed her to be described as the one artist who can't be copied her chameleon-like embrace of other artists art is also what has allowed her to be largely overlooked in the history of postwar American art. Featuring previously unpublished drawings and sketches from the artists archive, the book includes an essay by the exhibition curator that provides a comprehensive overview of the artists practice while situating it more concretely within American culture
Sturtevant : the razzle dazzle of thinking by Sturtevant( Book )

8 editions published in 2010 in English and French and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tiré du site Internet de JRP/Ringier: "Since the mid-1970s, Sturtevant (*1930, Ohio), a key artistic and, today, mythic figure for young contemporary artists, has been working on aesthetic, political, and media issues. Dealing with the concepts of appropriation, value, and originality, she mainly achieved recognition for her works that consist entirely of copies of other artists' iconic works, such as Warhol, Duchamp, Beuys, and Stella. Her gesture of replication has created a body of painting, sculpture, video, and photographic works, which is still intriguing and provoking for both an informed and a general audience. Edited by Anne Dressen on the occasion of the artist's major survey at the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, this monograph, which was designed in close collaboration with the artist, offers a compilation of her writings - mainly unpublished - a selection of essays on her work and life, as well as a specific iconography

Sturtevant turns the concept of originality on its head. All of her works are copies of the works of other artists; none is an original. Her work includes copies of works by Andy Warhol, Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Frank Stella, Felix Gonzalez-Torres. She masters painting, sculpture, photography and film in order to produce a full range of copies of the works of her chosen artists. In most cases, her decision to start copying an artist happened before those artists achieved broader recognition. Nearly all of the artists she chose to copy are today considered iconic for their time or style. This has given rise to discussions amongst art critics on how it has been possible for Sturtevant to identify these now famous artists at such an early stage
