Theatrical advertisement for "Out of Bondage," an 1876 musical tracing African American life from slavery through emancipation and freedom. Illustration depicts five African American men and women seated or standing around a kitchen table watching a young woman dance. "Out of Bondage" is credited with being the first African American musical comedy. Written in 1876 by Joseph Bradford and adapted by Samuel B. Hyers, the play was performed by the Hyers Sisters Combination, Sam Lucas, Dan Lewis, and others. The Hyers Sisters performed "Out of Bondage throughout the United States until the mid-1890s. This advertisement was probably printed for the performance at the Boston Theatre during the week of August 20th-25th 1877. The Hyers Sisters Combination, variously known as the Hyers Sisters' Concert Company or the Hyers Sisters' Negro Operatic and Dramatic Company, was the sister team of Anna Madah and Emma Louise Hyers of San Francisco; Samuel B. Hyers was their father and manager
