The Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) conducted a demonstration of a vacuum-enhanced recovery and feasibility of permeable treatment barriers for soil and groundwater remediation at an Independent Oil (Former Star Mart) site in Hazen, North Dakota. A total of 62,584 lb (28,388) of contaminant was recovered from impacted soils and groundwater. The mass of recovered contaminant equals approximately 10,116 gallons of product. Groundwater quality monitoring confirmed the continuing contaminants of concern (COC) reduction trend in most monitoring wells and an average benzene reduction of 85% within the entire impacted area since remediation system start-up. A comparison of mass balance estimates for the extraction system with biodegradation stoichiometry using the assimilative capacity of the groundwater indicates that in situ natural attenuation processes became a dominant factor in reducing COCs and that improved site conditions justified termination of corrective action. The unit cost of contaminant recovery was $15. 26/lb ($33.65/kg). If in situ degradation resulting from oxygen delivery is considered, the cost would be $12.62/b ($27.82/kg) of contaminant recovered or degraded

Investigation of the feasibility of underground coal gasification in North Dakota, United States( )

Highlights: A four-year feasibility study of underground coal gasification is presented. A test site was selected for feasibility investigation. Gasification test, a hydrogeological study and geomechanical study were performed. Results suggest favorable conditions for UCG development at the selected site. Abstract: Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising technology that has the potential to recover currently-unmineable coal resources. The technical feasibility and economic success of a UCG project is highly site specific. Any risks associated with UCG, such as subsidence, groundwater contamination, and syngas quality, should be sufficiently evaluated through a feasibility study. This paper presents a four-year UCG feasibility study utilizing lignite seams in North Dakota, United States. Four wells were drilled through the lignite seams at a selected site, and lignite and strata cores were recovered. A geological model of the formation was built, coal and rock properties were analyzed, and field hydrogeological tests and laboratory gasification tests were performed. This work provided valuable insights in rock mechanics, hydrogeology, and coal properties. The study results show that the selected site is suitable for development of a UCG plant because there are minimal induced subsidence risks, there is hydrological isolation from major aquifers and the coal produces desirable syngas quality for liquid fuel production. Methodologies developed in this study will benefit the design, optimization and management of the UCG process

Evaluation of current climatic trends and reconstruction of paleoclimatic conditions for Devils Lake have been conducted based on diatom-inferred salinity for the last 2000 years. The 3-year cross-disciplinary research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was carried out by the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) and St. Croix Watershed Research Station (SCWRS) at the Science Museum of Minnesota. The results indicate that frequent climatic fluctuations resulting in alternating periods of drought and wet conditions are typical for the northern Great Plains and suggest that the severity and length of extremes exceeded those on modern record. Devils Lake has experienced five fresh periods and two minor freshening periods in the last 2000 years. Transitions between fresh and saline periods have been relatively fast, representing lake level changes that have been similar to those observed in the last 150 years. From 0 to 1070 A.D., Devils Lake showed more variable behavior, with fresh phases centered at 200, 500, 700, and 1000 A.D. From 1070 A.D. to present, Devils Lake was generally saline, experiencing two minor freshening periods at 1305-1315 and 1800-1820 A.D. and the major current freshening from 1960 A.D. to the present
