Extragalactic background radiation : a meeting in honor of Riccardo Giacconi : proceedings of the Extragalactic Background Radiation Meeting, Baltimore, 1993 May 18-20 by Extragalactic background radiation Meeting( Book )

4 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What does the Extragalactic Background Radiation, from gamma-rays through to radio waves, tell us about the formation and evolution of structure in the universe? A workshop at the Space Telescope Science Institute was dedicated to address just this question: it provided a unique opportunity for observational astronomers and theorists to share their expertise and to help synthesise a new understanding. Fourteen invited reviews from internationally renowned experts are presented here as an edited and coherent overview. Chapters are dedicated to the gamma-ray, X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, microwave and radio backgrounds as well as to the detection of anisotropies and the theory of structure formation. Together these reviews provide a unique, multi-wavelength overview of the Extragalactic Background Radiation and how it relates to structure in the universe. They summarise our present knowledge, highlight outstanding problems and provide focus for future work. In this way they provide a unique reference for graduates and professionals in astronomy, cosmology and physics

Exploring dark matter with Milky Way substructure by Michael Kuhlen( Book )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The unambiguous detection of dark matter annihilation in our Galaxy would unravel one of the most outstanding puzzles in particle physics and cosmology. Recent observations have motivated models in which the annihilation rate is boosted by the Sommerfeld effect, a nonperturbative enhancement arising from a long-range attractive force. We applied the Sommerfeld correction to Via Lactea II, a high-resolution N-body simulation of a Milky Way-sized galaxy, to investigate the phase-space structure of the galactic halo. We found that the annihilation luminosity from kinematically cold substructure could be enhanced by orders of magnitude relative to previous calculations, leading to the prediction of gamma-ray fluxes from as many as several hundred dark clumps that should be detectable by the Fermi satellite."
Photon conserving radiative transfer around point sources in multi-dimensional numerical cosmology( )

Radiative transfer, galaxies: formation, cosmology: theory, galaxies: intergalactic medium, galaxies: ISM
Cycle 6 : Phase I proposal instructions : version 5.0( Book )

Reionization and the early intergalactic medium by Piero Madau( Visual )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Lecture on the development of structure in the universe during the epoch in which the first generation of stars was formed, and the time scale over which the transition from a neutral universe to one that is almost completely reionized took place. Explains how radiation sources prior to the epoch of reionization may be detected indirectly through their impact on the surrounding neutral IGM and the resulting emission or absorption against the cosmic microwave background
