Communication nets; stochastic message flow and delay by Leonard Kleinrock( Book )

20 editions published between 1964 and 2007 in English and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Considerable research has been devoted to the formulation and solution of problems involving flow within connected networks. Independent of these surveys, an extensive body of knowledge has accumulated on the subject of queues, particularly in regard to stochastic flow through single-node servicing facilities. This text combines studies of connected networks with those of stochastic flow, providing a basis for understanding the general behavior and operation of communication networks in realistic situations. Author Leonard Kleinrock of the Computer Science Department at UCLA created the basic principle of packet switching, the technology underpinning the Internet. In this text, he develops a queuing theory model of communications nets. Its networks are channel-capacity limited; consequently, the measure of performance is taken to be the average delay encountered by a message in passing through the net. Topics include questions pertaining to optimal channel capacity assignment, effect of priority and other queue disciplines, choice of routine procedure, fixed-cost restraint, and design of topological structures. Many separate facets are brought into focus in the concluding discussion of the simulation of communication nets, and six appendices offer valuable supplementary information
Realizing the information future : the Internet and beyond by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

3 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Presents the full text of "Realizing the Information Future: The Internet and Beyond," a report from the NRENAISSANCE Committee. Includes a preface, an executive summary, a list of Committee members, and a press release regarding the report. Offers access to a PostScript version of the report. Examines the possibility of an integrated national information infrastructure for the United States and its uses for educational institutions and libraries, as well as financial issues and the government's role. Contains sample principal sets and definitions of key terms. Notes that the project was approved by the Governing Board of the National Research Council, whose members are drawn from the councils of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Nerds 2.0.1 a brief history of the Internet( Visual )

1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A three part series examining the ins and outs of one of the most volatile industries: the Internet. This first episode examines how the seeds of the Internet were planted by Sputnik. In a reaction to Russia's leap ahead in technology, the Pentagon developed a new agency called ARPA. ARPAnet was created to connect computer researchers at universities across the nation. In nine months flat, the technology was invented, built and installed

Computer network research : semiannual technical report, July 1 - December 31, 1975 by Leonard Kleinrock( Book )

19 editions published between 1970 and 1975 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report presents two papers on the ARPA computer network. The first dwells on analytic and simulation models suitable for computer network design. The second effort emphasized here is that of the HOST-HOST communication protocol in the ARPA network (HOST is a computer system which is a member of the ARPA network)

Advanced Teleprocessing Systems( Book )

7 editions published between 1978 and 1985 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Research published during this reporting period covers a broad spectrum of results in the areas of random access communications, computer networks, and distributed processing (a new and rapidly growing area of research and practical importance). In this latter area, the major works involved the behavior of distributed algorithms for election and traversal in networks, and the evaluation of the achievable and achieved parallelism in parallel processing systems. A general model of distributed processing exposed a potential areas of networks and multiaccess, our results focus on improved and innovative models. A major contribution of our research during this reporting period is a dissertation entitled Distributed Algorithms for Election in Unidirectional and Complete Networks, by Yehuda Afek. This entire dissertation forms the body of this report

Yet another analytic study of input-buffered ATM switches by Christos Kolias( Book )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "We present a new, simpler than previously presented, refined approach in evaluating analytically the performance of an input- buffered ATM switching system under uniform-traffic. In addition to the input-queueing model, we study a switch model where there is no queueing whatsoever (therefore inducing cell-loss inside the switch) and which we call the pure-loss switch. In evaluating the former model, we use pure queueing theory tools to derive the system throughput, mean delay, waiting time distribution and queue length distribution. Some well-known results are rederived: the throughput of an input-queueing switch, which is 2- [square root of 2] = 0.586 and the throughput of the pure-loss switch, which is e[superscript -1] = 0.632."
Two processor time warp analysis : capturing the effects of message queueing and rollback/state saving costs by Robert Edman Felderman( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "We present two new models and their exact analysis for the problem of two processors running the Time Warp distributed simulation protocol. Our first model addresses the queueing of messages at each processor while the second model adds costs for rollback and state saving. Both models provide insight into the operation of freerunning systems synchronized by rollback."
