The sound of poetry, the poetry of sound by Marjorie Perloff( Book )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 259 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sound--one of the central elements of poetry--finds itself all but ignored in the current discourse on lyric forms. The essays collected here by Marjorie Perloff and Craig Dworkin break that critical silence to readdress some of the fundamental connections between poetry and sound--connections that go far beyond traditional metrical studies. Ranging from medieval Latin lyrics to a cyborg opera, sixteenth-century France to twentieth-century Brazil, romantic ballads to the contemporary avant-garde, the contributors to The Sound of Poetry/The Poetry of Sound explore such subjects as the translatabil

Ground works : avant-garde for thee( Book )

7 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ground Works is like an axonometric drawing in that it reveals the true inner workings behind and underneath Canada's literary edifice, with Margaret Atwood as the architect and Christian Bok as the engineer. Together Atwood and Bok have assembled an anthology unlike any other in Canadian literature. Here are the wild and weird, transgressive and transformative, funny and fearless works at the root of our best writing. Here is our avant-garde, the works that were ground out by "ground-under" writers, as Chris Scott calls them in his experimental novel, Bartleby. The works that challenged and changed our literary ground from underneath."--Jacket
The xenotext by Christian Bök( Book )

7 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"After successfully demonstrating his concept in a colony of E. coli , Bök is on the verge of enciphering a beautiful, anomalous poem into the genome of an unkillable bacterium (Deinococcus radiodurans), which can, in turn, read his text, responding to it by manufacturing a viable, benign protein, whose sequence of amino acids enciphers yet another poem. The engineered organism might conceivably serve as a post-apocalyptic archive, capable of outlasting our civilization. Book I of The Xenotext constitutes a kind of 'demonic grimoire,' providing a scientific framework for the project with a series of poems, texts, and illustrations. A Virgilian welcome to the Inferno, Book I is the "orphic" volume in a diptych, addressing the pastoral heritage of poets, who have sought to supplant nature in both beauty and terror. The book sets the conceptual groundwork for the second volume, which will document the experiment itself. The Xenotext is experimental poetry in the truest sense of the term. Christian Bök is the author of Crystallography (1994), a 'pataphysical encyclopedia' and 'Pataphysics: The Poetics of an Imaginary Science (2001). His book Eunoia won the 2002 Griffin Poetry Prize and is the best-selling Canadian poetry book of all time. He currently teaches at the University of Calgary, Alberta"--Provided by publisher
Crystallography by Christian Bök( Book )

8 editions published between 1994 and 2009 in English and held by 141 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Crystallography is the mineral science whose name means 'lucid writing.' Long out of print, but now available again in an elegant revised edition, this extraordinary work of avant-garde literature explores the boundary between science and poetry, suggesting that to write with clarity in either discipline involves the most intense thought, much like an act of 'lucid dreaming.' The book reveals that, within the sediment of everyday language, poems are the crystalline formations. -- Back cover

The word 'eunoia, ' which literally means 'beautiful thinking, ' is the shortest word in English that contains all five vowels. Directly inspired by the Oulipo (l'Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle), a French writers' group interested in experimenting with different forms of literary constraint, Eunoia is a five-chapter book in which each chapter is a univocal lipogram - the first chapter has A as its only vowel, the second chapter E, etc. Each vowel takes on a distinct personality: the I is egotistical and romantic, the O jocular and obscene, the E elegiac and epic (including a retelling of the
