The Holocaust, Israel and 'the Jew' : histories of antisemitism in postwar Dutch society by Remco Ensel( )

9 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 229 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is the first comprehensive study of postwar antisemitism in the Netherlands. It focuses on the way stereotypes are passed on from one decade to the next, as reflected in public debates, the mass media, protests and commemorations, and everyday interactions. [The book] explores the ways in which old stories and phrases relating to 'the stereotypical Jew' are recycled and modified for new uses, linking the antisemitism of the early postwar years to its enduring manifestations in today's world"--Page 4 of cover

4 editions published in 1994 in Dutch and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Analyzes specific antisemitic events, polemics, and publications in the Netherlands between 1987-94, preceded by a survey on the development of theological, economic, and political antisemitism. Outlines the debate at the end of 1987 aroused by plans to perform Fassbinder's play; provocative antisemitic publications (e.g. Theo van Gogh's pamphlet "Moviola", 1984); publications by the student magazines "Propria Cures" in 1992 and "Nait Soez'n" in 1993, which led to legal proceedings; and the furor following the destruction of the Auschwitz monument in January 1993. Pleads to break public silence on the trauma of the murder of 80% of Dutch Jewry in the Holocaust and the passive attitude of the Dutch authorities and the population at that time, in order to correct the overly positive image of the Dutch during World War II. Non-Jews should examine their ambivalence toward Jews (guilt, jealousy, etc.), and Jews should find a balance between their own identity and solidarity with others
