Das Katz-und Maus-Spiel des ungleichen Paares geht weiter ... "Dieses obskure Objekt der Begierde" basiert auf Motiven des Romans "La femme et le pantin" von Pierre Louys, der zuvor unter anderem von Josef von Sternberg ("Der Teufel ist eine Frau" mit Marlene Dietrich) und Julien Duvivier ("Ein Weib wie ein Satan" mit Brigitte Bardot) verfilmt wurde. Luis Buñuel jedoch verleiht der Geschichte völlig neue Akzente. Immer wieder vermischt er Geschlechter- und Klassenkampf. Die Rolle der Conchita besetzte Buñuel gleich mit zwei Schauspielerinnen. Die zarte, hintergründige Erotik von Carole Bouquet und die etwas derberen, unverblümten Reize von Angela Molina verbinden sich perfekt zu einem komplexen, widersprüchlichen Charakter
