Dereliction of duty : Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the lies that led to Vietnam by H. R McMaster( Book )

24 editions published between 1997 and 2017 in English and held by 2,331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The result is an inescapable correction to the prevailing view that an American war in Vietnam was inevitable. The book follows step-by-step the series of developments and secret decisions made in Washington between November 1963 and July 1965 to intensify the American military commitment in Southeast Asia. And it reveals that the disaster that followed was not caused by impersonal forces but by uniquely human failures at the highest levels of the U.S. government: arrogance, weakness, lying in the pursuit of self-interest, and above all, the abdication of responsibility to the American people

Dereliction of duty by H. R McMaster( Recording )

5 editions published between 1997 and 2017 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The war in Vietnam was not lost in the field, nor was it lost on the front pages of the New York Times or the college campuses. It was lost in Washington, D.C."--H. R. McMaster (from the Conclusion). Dereliction Of Duty is a stunning analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why. McMaster pinpoints the policies and decisions that got the United States into the morass and reveals who made these decisions and the motives behind them, disproving the published theories of other historians and excuses of the participants. Dereliction Of Duty focuses on a fascinating cast of characters: President Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy and other top aides who deliberately deceived the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the U.S. Congress and the American public. McMaster's only book, Dereliction of Duty is an explosive and authoritative new look at the controversy concerning the United States involvement in Vietnam
The art of command : military leadership from George Washington to Colin Powell by Harry S Laver( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What essential leadership lessons do we learn by distilling the actions and ideas of great military commanders such as George Washington, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Colin Powell? That is the fundamental question underlying The Art of Command : Military Leadership from George Washington to Colin Powell. The book illustrates that great leaders become great through conscious effort--a commitment not only to develop vital skills but also to surmount personal shortcomings. Harry S. Laver, Jeffrey J. Matthews, and the other contributing authors identify nine core characteristics of highly effective leadership, such as integrity, determination, vision, and charisma, and nine significant figures in American military history whose careers embody those qualities. The Art of Command examines each figure's strengths and weaknesses and how those attributes affected their leadership abilities, offering a unique perspective of military leadership in American history. Laver and Matthews have assembled a list of contributors from military, academic, and professional circles, which allows the book to encompass diverse approaches to the study of leadership"--

Crack in the foundation : defense transformation and the underlying assumption of dominant knowledge in future war by H. R McMaster( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper examines and evaluates the basic assumption that underpins much of the defense transformation initiative. The intellectual foundation for building tomorrow's military force rests on the unfounded assumption that technologies emerging from the information revolution" will lift the fog of war and permit U.S. forces to achieve a very high degree of certainty in future military operations. The assumption of dominant knowledge in future war threatens to undermine the best efforts of senior military and civilian officials and create vulnerabilities in future American forces. The paper examines the origin and growth of the assumption and demonstrates how it has pervaded and corrupted joint and service visions of future war and is already having a negative effect on doctrine and organization. The paper exposes the fallacy of near-certainty in future war using logic and military history including analysis of recent conflicts. Desert Storm, Somalia, Kosovo, and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom receive particular attention. The paper also evaluates Joint experimentation and concept development and makes recommendations concerning the next steps to take in defense transformation. The paper concludes that an embrace of the uncertainty of war, balanced Joint Forces, effective joint integration, and adaptive leadership will prove critical to future national security
Ideas as weapons : influence and perception in modern warfare by G. J David( Book )

2 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The United States has struggled to define its approach to what has been termed the "information battlefield" since the dawn of the information era. Yet with the outbreak of the war on terrorism, the United States is being violently challenged to take a position and react to militants' use of emerging information technology. Ideological demigods operating against the United States now have unprecedented channels by which to disseminate their message to those uncertain, sympathetic, or actively engaged in their philosophy. From the caves of southeastern Afghanistan to the streets of Baghdad, "the message" has dominated the thinking of those who perpetrate horrific acts of violence, whether in the name of ideology, ethnic and sectarian partisanship, or religion." "This book seeks to illuminate the uses of information in armed conflict by juxtaposing the views of those who engage in manipulating information against the historic context. The anthology is divided into four sections: geopolitical, strategic, operational, and tactical. The geopolitical perspective is that dominated by world politics, diplomacy, and the elements of national power excluding military force. The strategic view examines where the violence has begun and the military element of power that has become a major contributing factor. The operational perspective handles the campaigns to accomplish a specific purpose on the world stage- for example, the Iraq campaign. Finally, the tactical level takes into account the individual and the individual clashes within the campaigns at issue. Because the nexus of information conflict is most easily viewed in the world's contemporary violent confrontations, this anthology is heavily weighted toward military personnel who have managed these difficult issues."--Jacket
Transforming command : the pursuit of mission command in the U.S., British, and Israeli armies by Eitan Shamir( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On today's complex, fragmented, fast-moving battlefield, where combatants adapt constantly to exploit one-another's weaknesses, there is a demonstrable requirement for military commanders to devolve a high level of autonomy of decision-making and action to leaders on the ground. An effective model for doing this has existed for some time in the form of mission command and has been utilized by the U.S., Israeli, and British Armies, but with mixed success. This book examines in depth the experiences of the armed forces of each of these countries in implementing mission command, and reveals the key factors that have determined the success or failure of the implementation - factors such as the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA), the spread of low-intensity conflicts and operations other than war, and differences in how military cultures interpret, articulate, and exercise the command function. It has significant implications for both the development of military doctrine and the training and education of tomorrow's military leaders--Publisher's description

I want to begin by thanking you for volunteering to serve our nation and human- kind in time of war. We are engaged, as previous generations were engaged, against enemies who pose a great threat to all civilized peoples. As those generations defeated Nazi fascism, Japanese imperialism, and communist totalitarianism, we will defeat these enemies, who cynically use a perverted interpretation of religion to incite hatred and violence. The murder of more than three thousand of our fellow Americans on September 11, 2001, is etched indelibly in all of our memories. Since those attacks, our nation has been at war with those who believe that there are no innocent Americans. It is those of you who have volunteered for military service in time of war who will continue to stand between terrorists who murder innocents-including children-as they do almost every day in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen-and those whom those terrorists would victimize
