Strandbeest : the dream machines of Theo Jansen by Lena Herzog( Book )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For the past seven years, photographer and artist Lena Herzog has followed the evolution of a new, kinetic species. Intricate as insects, but with bursts of equine energy, the "Strandbeests" or "beach creatures," are the creation of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, who has been working for nearly two decades to develop a new life-form that moves, and even survives, on its own. Set to roam the beaches of Holland, the Strandbeests pick up the wind in their gossamer wings and spring, as if by metamorphosis, into action. As if it were blood, not the breeze, running through their delicate forms, they quiver, cavort, and trot against the sun and sea, pausing to change direction if they sense loose sand or water that might destabilize their movement. Coinciding with a travelling exhibition, Herzog's photographic tribute captures Jansen's menagerie in a meditative black and white, showcasing Jansen's imaginative vision, as well as the compelling intersection of animate and inanimate in his creatures. The result is a work of art in its own right and a mesmerizing encounter not only with a very surrealist brand of marvelous, but also with whole new ideas of existence

"Theo Jansen (1948) studied physics at the University of Delft (The Netherlands) from 1968-1975. He left University to become an artist. He painted for the first seven years. In 1980 he built a flying saucer (15 ft flashing lights, beep sounds) that flew over Delft and set the town in commotion. Then he built a light sensitive spray-gun which paints an object on a surface. Since 1986 Theo Jansen has been writing a column for the Volkskrant (national newspaper). Since 1990 he has been working on a new creation: skeletons made of electric-conduits which walk on windpower. These animals have evolved into several generations over the last twelve years. Eventually he wants to put the anima Is out in herds on the beaches, where they live their own lives."--Strandbeest Web Shop

Theo Jansen : the great pretender by Theo Jansen( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since 1990 kinetic artist Theo Jansen has been engaged in creating new forms of life: beach animals. These are not made of protein like the existing life-forms but from another basic stuff, yellow plastic tubing. Skeletons made from these tubes are able to walk. They get their energy from the wind, so they don?t have to eat like regular animals. They evolved over many generations, becoming increasingly adept at surviving storms and water from the sea. Theo Jansen?s ultimate wish is to release herds of these animals on the shore. In redoing the Creation, so to speak, he hopes to become wiser in his dealings with the existing nature by encountering problems the Real Creator had to face. 0'The Great Pretender' is a testimonial to his experiences as God. It?s not easy being God; there are plenty of disappointments along the way. But on the few occasions that things work out, being God is the most wonderful thing in the world. 00Expanded and updated edition on the work of Theo Jansen

Presents Dutch artist Theo Jansen, who has been working for 16 years to create kinetic sculptures that move on their own in lifelike ways; each generation of his "Strandbeests" is subject to the forces of evolution, with successful forms moving forward into new designs. Illustrates his newest creatures, made of plastic tubes and lemonade bottles, that walk without assistance on the beaches of Holland and are powered by wind. Jansen demonstrates the amazingly lifelike sculptures he creates and how they are designed to move and even survive on their own; feeding on gusts of wind
