Green fluorescent protein : properties, applications, and protocols by Martin Chalfie( Book )

31 editions published between 1996 and 2011 in English and held by 861 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Green fluorescent protein (GFP), a biological marker cloned from jellyfish, has emerged from virtual obscurity to the forefront of biomolecular research in just a few years. GFP and related fluorescent proteins (FPs) have been intensely studied - the subjects of hundreds of in vivo projects worldwide. These studies have resulted in new applications and published articles, emerging at a breathtaking rate. The success of FPs and their many uses promise to make them some of the most powerful tools in biotechnology, pharmaceutical science, and molecular and cellular biology." "Written by pioneers in the field, this text tackles both theory and practice, offering numerous case studies, examples, illustrations, and troubleshooting tips. It examines how FPs are tailored for specific systems and used to maximize expression, and how variants are generated with altered properties. The text also explores new ways to use FPs and methods for enhancing detection in a variety of organisms and cell types. This updated and expanded edition places emphasis on the rise of FPs and their applications in industry and biosensor research." "Green Fluorescent Protein: Properties, Applications, and Protocols, Second Edition is essential reading for researchers and graduate students in molecular and cellular biology, physiology, biochemistry, developmental biology, neuroscience, ecology, in vivo biology, and plant molecular biology."--Jacket

WormBook : the online review of C. elegans biology by D. M Eisenmann( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

WormBook is the online text companion to WormBase, the C. elegans model organism database. WormBook contains original reviews on all aspects of C. elegans biology and up-to-date descriptions of technical procedures used to study this animal. WormBook also includes WormMethods, an up-to-date collection of methods and protocols for C. elegans researchers. Also provides an online link to WormAtlas, a database of behavioral and structural anatomy of Caenorhabditis elegans
GFP : lighting up life by Martin Chalfie( Visual )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The great American baseball player Yogi Berra once said, "You can observe a lot by watching." Unfortunately, before the early 1990s observations in the biological sciences were usually done on dead specimens that were specially prepared and permeabilized to allow entry of reagents to stain cell components. These methods allowed a glimpse of what cells were doing, but they gave a necessarily static view of life, just snapshots in time. Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) and other fluorescent proteins revolutionized the biological sciences because these proteins allowed scientists to look at the inner workings of living cells. GFP can be used to tell where genes are turned on, where proteins are located within tissues, and how cell activities change over time. Once a cell can be seen, it can be studied and manipulated. The story of the discovery and development of GFP also provides a very nice example of how scientific progress is often made: through accidental discoveries, the willingness to ignore previous assumptions and take chances, and the combined efforts of many people. The story of GFP also shows the importance of basic research on non-traditional organisms
