12 rules for life : an antidote to chaos by Jordan B Peterson( Book )

31 editions published between 2017 and 2019 in English and held by 1,766 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What does everyone in the modern world need to know? Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research. Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street. What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers."--
Maps of meaning : the architecture of belief by Jordan B Peterson( Book )

17 editions published between 1999 and 2002 in English and Undetermined and held by 836 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Why would people in different places and times formulate myths and stories with similar symbols and meanings? Are groups of people with different religious or ideological beliefs doomed to eternal conflict? Are the claims of science and religion truly irreconcilable? What might be done to decrease the individual propensity for group-fostered cruelty? Maps of Meaning addresses these questions with a provocative new hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths and religious stories have long narrated. Peterson's ambitious interdisciplinary odyssey draws insights from the worlds of religion, cognitive science and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative. Maps of Meaning offers a critical guide to the riches of archaic and modern thought and invaluable insights into human motivation and emotion."--Cover

Jordan B. Peterson's Maps of Meaning is now available for the first time as an audio download! Why have people from different cultures and eras formulated myths and stories with similar structures? What does this similarity tell us about the mind, morality, and structure of the world itself? From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind

Potential psychological markers for the predisposition to alcoholism by Jordan B Peterson( )

3 editions published between 1990 and 1992 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sons of male alcoholics (SOMAs) are at increased risk for the development of alcoholism, and are apparently characterized by other abnormalities. It is possible that one or more of these abnormalities might serve as a marker for the alcoholic predisposition. Research described in this thesis, conducted in the hopes of identifying such a marker, was designed (1) to separate the relative pharmacological and psychological effects of acute alcohol intoxication upon neuropsychological functioning; (2) to investigate the neuropsychological function of SOMAs with a multigenerational family history of male alcoholism; (3) to examine the relationship between SOMAs' neuropsychological function and their cardiovascular hyper-reactivity to threat of and aversive stimuli; and (4) to investigate the relationship between a number of cardiovascular response patterns and voluntary weekly alcohol consumption. These studies are linked conceptually, within the context of a general theory of information-processing and action." --

From Dispositions to Goals to Ideology: Toward a Synthesis of Personality and Social Psychological Approaches to Political Orientation( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: We review existing research on the associations between political orientation and Big Five traits such as Openness to Experience and Conscientiousness. We suggest that analyzing these traits at the aspect level sheds light on motivational mechanisms underlying these links. For example, we present evidence that only one of the two aspects of Conscientiousness ("Orderliness") reliably predicts conservatism. To account for this relationship, and to more generally describe how traits translate into political orientation, we present a new model, the Disposition‐Goals‐Ideology (DiGI) Model. The DiGI model outlines specific interrelationships among dispositions, goals, and ideological beliefs that help to shape individual differences in political orientation

Mad but glad : exercise your mind( Visual )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The career of award winning pianist, Nick Van Bloss, was destroyed in mid-performance by his Tourette's Syndrome. Struck by the illness as a child, music had been his salvation but one day mid-performance it returned and when it did it changed his life. Nick needs to know how he became who he is - Tourette's wrecked his career, but did it also create it? The spectre of the ''mad-genius'' has gripped our imagination for years, but is it real? Paul Howard-Jones at the University of Exeter is examining the brain at the point of creativity under MRI conditions - when he looks at pictures of Nick's brain it is clear that his brain finds it hard to switch off its creative urges. Matt Savage is another talented musician - he is autistic. Nick and Matt meet and discuss what music means to both of them. Alice Flaherty discusses her hypergraphia and Greg Rice his composing. Nick and Greg meet; the relationship of dopamine to their conditions is discussed. Jordan B. Peterson has a theory that creative people suffer from low latent inhibition, an inability to filter the world, this theory makes sense to Nick. Nick then meets schizophrenic artist David Waldorf and classical composer Tobias Picker who also has Tourette's. Finally, Oliver Sacks meets Nick and discusses creativity and Tourette's, further convincing him that his Tourette's is most likely the trigger for his creativity
