Phi theory : phi-features across modules and interfaces( )

14 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 1,334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Phi-features, such as person, number, and gender, present a rare opportunity for syntacticians, morphologists and semanticists to collaborate on a research enterprise in which they all have an equal stake and which they all approach with data and insights from their own fields. This volume is the first to attempt to bring together these different strands and styles of research. It presents the core questions, major results, and new directions of this emergent area of linguistic theory and shows how Phi Theory casts light on the nature of interfaces and the structure of the grammar. The book will interest scholars and students of all aspects of linguistic theory at graduate level and above."--BOOK JACKET
A syntax of substance by David Adger( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 895 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Adger proposes a new approach to phrase structure that eschews functional heads and labels structures exocentrically. The proposal simultaneously simplifies the syntactic system and restricts the range of possible structures, ruling out the ubiquitous (remnant) roll-up derivations and forcing a separation of arguments from their apparent heads. This new system has a number of empirical consequences, which the book explores in the domain of relational nominals across different language families, including Germanic, Romance, Celtic, Polynesian, and Semitic
Peripheries : syntactic edges and their effects by David Adger( )

20 editions published between 1899 and 2004 in English and held by 707 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Audience: Academics and graduate students interested in syntax and its interfaces with semantics and prosody, acquisition of syntax, cross-linguistic comparison."--Jacket
Core syntax : a minimalist approach by David Adger( Book )

20 editions published between 2002 and 2012 in English and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Core Syntax is an introduction to the structure of sentences in human languages. Assuming no prior knowledge of linguistic theory and little of elementary grammar, it is an ideal text for students coming to syntactic theory for the first time, either as graduates or undergraduates."--Jacket
Mirrors and microparameters : phrase structure beyond free word order by David Adger( Book )

23 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What is the nature of syntactic structure? Why do some languages have radically free word order ('nonconfigurationality')? Do parameters vary independently (the micro-view) or can they co-vary en masse (the macro-view)? Mirrors and Microparameters examines these questions by looking beyond the definitional criterion of nonconfigurationality - that arguments may be freely ordered, omitted, and split. Drawing on newly discovered data from Kiowa, a member of the largely undescribed Kiowa-Tanoan language family, the book reveals that classically nonconfigurational languages can nonetheless exhibit robustly configurational effects. Reconciling the cooccurrence of such freedom with such rigidity has major implications for the Principles and Parameters program. This novel approach to nonconfigurational languages challenges widespread assumptions of linguistic theory and throws light on the syntactic structures, ordering principles, and nature of parametrization that comprise Universal Grammar"--Provided by publisher

Functional heads and interpretation by David Adger( Book )

6 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis examines the effect that functional heads have on the interpretation of arguments. It focuses on the functional head Agr, which is implicated in predicate-argument agreement relations; the import that other functional heads have on interpretation is a subsidiary concern. The argument of the thesis goes as follows: firstly, reference must be made to both an independently projecting functional head Agr and to a level of discourse representation in order to adequately analyse the phenomenon of predicate argument agreement. This theory sheds light on an unusual complementarity between agreement and overt arguments in Celtic because it provides a natural constraint on morphological feature checking mechanisms. The thesis shows that functional heads are therefore implicated in the interpretation of arguments
Control into intentional events by David Adger( Book )

3 editions published in 1991 in English and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "This paper focusses on the control of unexpressed arguments in purpose constructions. I argue that these constructions are semantic modifiers which introduce an intentional component into the semantics of their matrix sentence. I show that, contrary to Jones (1985), the differing control patterns of purpose clauses arise, not from different syntactic categorisations, but rather from semantic factors. The factors that are particularly relevant include the lexically specified properties of the participants of the matrix clause along with the properties they inherit as a result of being arguments of the matrix verb. I argue that any account of control based on a non-substantive theory of thematic relations is likely to be empirically inadequate. I show how to construct a semantics for purpose clauses based on their modificational syntax and how to characterise various types of arbitrary and obligatory control in a system based on partial information."
A syntax of substance by David Adger( Book )

2 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Economy and Optionality Interpretation of Subjects in Italian by David Adger( Book )

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An analysis of subject placement in Italian argues that placement is not determined entirely by case, but also partly by interpretational considerations. The crucial step in the argument is that there are independent well-formedness conditions on discourse structures and that the apparent interpretational effects on preposed subjects of unaccusatives in Italian are actually effects that derive from judgments of felicity in discourse. The apparent optionality of syntactic movement is in fact conditioned by an interface constraint that requires each well-formed discourse representation structure to have a set of corresponding terminal syntactic structures. These considerations interact with a notion of global Economy to derive the correlation between subject placement, optionality, and interpretation. This conclusion actually reinforces rather than threatens the autonomy of syntax. It removes any features from the syntax that have purely interpretational motivation and leaves a simple theory of argument licensing that is purely structural. Contains 23 references. (MSE)
