Draw what you see<, was my fathers response, when I managed to smuggle to the mens barracks the drawings of children building a snowman. This was in December of 1941, shortly after we arrived in Theresienstadt. That snowman was actually my last genuine drawing as a child. Through this sentence of my fathers, and through my own inner motivation, I felt called from now on to capture in my drawings the everyday life of the ghetto. The diary of a Holocaust survivor, covering the period from September 1938 to May 1945. Helga Weiss (Weissová), was born in 1929 in Prague to a Jewish family. She was deported in December 1941, along with her parents, to Theresienstadt and remained there until September 1944, when she was transferred to Auschwitz and then to the camps of Freiberg and Mauthausen. She wrote her diary while she was in Prague and Theresienstadt. Prior to the deportation to Auschwitz she hid the diary in one of the barracks. After the war, in 1945, she found it and completed it, writing down her later experiences in the camps. Her father perished, and her mother survived together with Helga. The book is interspersed with drawings made by Weiss in Theresienstadt and hidden there
