The triumphant victim : a psychoanalytical perspective on sadomasochism and perverse thinking by J. F Miller( )

4 editions published between 2013 and 2019 in English and held by 743 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book examines the unrecognised prevalence of sadomasochism and perverse thinking in personal relationships as well as the public domain, and discusses the way it contributes to the culture of the victim. The first part traces the origins of perverse pathology and how it operates in obstructing emotional development and producing dysfunctional relationships. This is put in the context of hysteria, exhibitionism, voyeurism, and projective identification and is illustrated with clinical material drawn from the author's thirty years of psychoanalytical practice as well as experiences of couple- and family-therapy and educational consultations. The second half of the book examines current modes of thinking and belief systems with particular emphasis on tribal, basic-assumption mentality. The author examines the legacy of Cartesian dualism and the Enlightenment in contributing to the marginalization of feminine values in favour of negative, masculine control. Fundamentalist belief, the 'New Atheism' and feminism are subjected to particular scrutiny for evidence of perverse thinking leading to internal contradictions and the manifestation of these in the consulting room is illustrated with clinical material. In particular, State interference in family life, sexuality, and personal relationships is discussed and the resultant consequences both for erosion of civil liberties and interference in personal, emotional development. The final section consists of longer case histories."--Provided by publisher

A naturalist's calendar, : with observations in various branches of natural history; by Gilbert White( Book )

1 edition published in 1795 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The naturalist Gilbert White (1720-93) was known for his meticulous observations of flora and fauna in their natural environment, primarily around his village of Selborne in Hampshire. This posthumous 1795 publication, edited by the physician and writer John Aikin (1747-1822), comprises a collection of extracts from White's previously unpublished papers from 1768 to his death. Presented here for 'lovers of natural knowledge' is a full year of White's observations. Following the month-by-month record of natural events, the book contains brief studies of birds, quadrupeds, insects, plants and the weather. A lifelong lover of the outdoors, White had kept a near daily record of his activities for more than forty years. Regarded as one of the fathers of ecology, inspiring others to appreciate the natural world, White is best known for The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne (1789), which is also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection

Development of techniques for preparing homogeneous single crystals of lead telluride, lead selenide, and lead sulfide( Book )

4 editions published between 1965 and 1966 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Research results showed that vacuum sublimation can yield PbTe with high apparent electron mobilities. However, examination of the crystals revealed the presence of a second (Pb-rich) phase, and results of electrical-property studies suggest that the high mobilities may be due to the presence of the second phase. Results of studies of the doping of PbTe with Hg and Pt, although not conclusive with regard to Hg, indicated that Pt is a donor in PbTe that appears to react with intrinsic defects in such a way that free-carrier concentrations and carrier scattering are reduced. High-mobility Pt-doped crystals were prepared with 77K carrier concentrations as low as 5 x 10 to the 16th power/cu cm. Several techniques, including growth from the melt, vapor growth, solution growth, and heat treatment, were investigated for the preparation of low-carrier-density crystals of PbTe-SnTe alloy. The better crystals, with carrier concentrations in the 10 to the 16th and 10 to the 17th powers/cu cm, ranges were prepared by vapor growth. Although large crystals of PbTe and PbTe-SnTe alloy were grown from solution, further development of the method is required. (Author)
Post-test analyses of aqueous batteries developed for electric propulsion : Summary report for January 1985-September 1986 by J. F Miller( Book )

3 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document is a summary of the activities conducted on post-test examination of aqueous electric-vehicle batteries from January 1985 to September 1986. The post-test analyses were conducted to determine the causes of performance degradation (e.g., capacity decline, power loss, self-discharge) in lead-acid and nickel/iron batteries. For the lead-acid batteries, the primary causes of capacity decline were generally found to be morphological changes in the positive active material, corrosion of the positive electrode grid, and loss of contact between the active material and grid in the positive electrode. For the nickel/iron batteries, the primary factors responsible for performance degradation were transport of iron through the separator to the nickel electrode and loss of contact between the active materials and current collector. These results have permitted more accurate assessments of current technical progress in development of aqueous electric-vehicle batteries and have helped to direct future R and D efforts
