To prove he is wrong, they decide to elope. Leaving a note, they start out in a buggy that breaks down, so they continue on foot. They hitch a ride in an automobile that blows up. Positive that their pursuers must be close behind, they start running (though in fact, no one is chasing them!) Bessie collapses from exhaustion, so Harry borrows a wheelborrow from a passing farmer. They continue until they come to a boat landing, get in a canoe, start paddling, and somehow manage to fall out. In sheer disgust, the bedraggled couple return home, unmarried. There they find that Bessie's mother and father have not been chasing them at all, but instead have invited all their friends to a wedding feast, and even have the minister there, just in case. The muddy, sodden pair are married at last!
