Through nine seasons at various spas, the splendid foursome lives elegant, perfect lives. But nothing is as it seems. As John says at one point, "My wife and I knew the Captain and his wife Mrs. Ashburnham as well as was possible to know anybody. And yet we knew nothing about them at all." The film explores the power games, class snobbery, sexual lies, and lack of intimacy that boil beneath the placid, pristine exteriors the upper classes show the world. The story is presented in flashback, a literary technique Madox Ford helped popularize

The Jane Austen collection by Jane Austen( Visual )

2 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The popularity of the adaptations of Jane Austen's novels is staggering. Much is attributed to her use of such universal themes as marriage, social pressure, and the generation gap; many love her strong, spirited and unpretentious heroines and her emphasis on reason, moderation, fidelity and consideration; but most of all it is her sparkling dialogue, razor-sharp wit, marvellous characters and ingeniously intricate plots that have made her a small-screen success. All of these are intrinsic in the BBC television adaptations of the Austen novels. "Emma" perfectly balances humour and romance; "Persuasion" has a great strong heroine; "Sense and sensibility" features the duelling of spirited sisters; "Mansfield Park" can claim Austen's most outrageous supporting characters; "Northanger Abbey" marvellously satirizes gothic romances, while the electric sensuality of "Pride and prejudice" has, with the courtship of Elizabeth and Darcy, remained everyone's favourite love story
