Jacques Tati's feature debut is an hilarious exposé of the modern obsession with speed and efficiency, set in the sleepy surroundings of a tiny French village. Tati himself plays a postman who, impressed by the efficiency of the American postal system, makes a wholly misguided attempt to introduce modern methods in the depths of rural France

A gray view of city roofs provides both the first and the last image in this drama of stifled lives adapted from the novel by Emile Zola. Thérèse is married to her cousin Camille, a spoiled mama's boy unlikely to grow out of it, as Mama lives with them, pampering Camille and bullying Thérèse. His childhood friend Laurent, upon meeting Thérèse, falls in love almost instantly. This leads to a torrid affair, which spirals out of control into murder. A chance witness blackmails the lovers, and Mama--paralyzed by a stroke upon learning of Camille's death--suspects the truth. The witness is killed while crossing the street in front of a speeding truck. However, he has ordered his maid to mail a letter if he does not return, and the lovers are relentlessly pursued by their fate

In this enchanting debut feature, Jacques Tati stars as a fussbudget of a postman who is thrown for a loop when a traveling fair comes to his village. Tati shot this film simultaneously in black and white and in an untested color process that proved impossible to print copies of. In 1964 he re-edited it with added hand-colored footage, and in 1995 the full-color film was able to be released from the original color negatives

Der diskrete Charme der Bourgeoisie by Luis Buñuel( Visual )

10 editions published between 1972 and 2011 in German and English and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

(Quelle: Umschlagtext)
