Maria Martins : metamorfoses, 10 de julho a 15 de setembro by Maria Martins( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in Portuguese and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First large-scale exhibition dedicated to Maria Martins (Campanha, Minas Gerais 1894 - Rio de Janeiro, RJ 1973), "aimed to capture the continuous transformations of form throughout Maria's artistic development, not only in her sculptures, but also in the paintings, drawings, and prints that dialogue with them. the idea was to show how the disfiguration of the human, in this work, is always the beginning of the figuration of another form, which at times comes close to being vegetal and, at others, animal. to this end, the exhibition has been divided into five sections - tropics, vines, goddesses and monsters, songs, skeletons - determined from the communication of form rather than by chronology. The sections were not intended to be stagnant, but, on the contrary, fluid (metamorphosis is endless). There were works that meet in the passage between one and the other that oscillated between here and there. As a complement to the sculptures, paintings, drawings, and prints exhibited, a piece of jewelry designed by Maria Martins and a series of seventeen ceramics from her house in Petrópolis were on display. The artist's activity as a writer has also been considered here, with her three books and articles published by her in the Correio da Manhá newspaper, the latter almost unknown today and reproduced at the end of this catalog." --Page 271

Curated by author and art critic Veronica Stigger, the selected pieces -280 works belonging to MAM's collection- and where hysteria can be a form of artistic expression, praising insanity, illustrating "untamable and metamorphosed bodies" that manifest themselves through losing control, hysteria, and impulsivity. Works include different media such as photograph, painting, video, print, drawing, sculpture, and performance by over 120 different artists. The exhibition was divided in three different concepts extracted from author Clarice Lispector's work, which function as conducting threads that separate the works in these cores: Grito ancestral [Ancestral Cry], Montagem humana [Human Setup], and Vida primária [Primal Life]. Works by celebrated artists such as Lívio Abramo, Farnese de Andrade, Claudia Andujar, Flávio de Carvalho, Sandra Cinto, Antonio Dias, Hudinilson Jr., Almir Mavignier, Cildo Meireles, Vik Muniz, Mira Schendel, Tunga, Adriana Varejão, and many others
