This movie is a dramatisation of the popular song of the same title debuted in 1961. It begins with the escape of two youths from a juvenile classification home in Tokyo (Kantō Shōnen Kanbetsujo). One of them, Ryōji, aspires to be a jazz musician or drummer. The other, Kyū, begins working in a cargo company near the Tsukiji fish market. A third youth, Ken, works in a pub house but privately is studying to enter university. Mitsuko, the daughter of the owner of the cargo company where Kyū works, has to sit on wheelchair. Her elder sister Noriko, an adopted child in fact, is optimistic and bright, however. The sorrows and struggles for survival of these youths eventually weave a forward looking ending for all
