He is wounded in a fight between Critolaus, the anti-Roman Corinthian leader, and Callicrates, head of a minority group in favor of accepting Roman rule; and he unwittingly hides in Critolaus' villa. In secret, Vinicius is restored to health by Hebe, Critolaus' daughter, and they fall in love. Callicrates' wife, Artimede, is likewise attracted to Vinicius and becomes insanely jealous. Meanwhile, the Romans send Lucius Mummius to lead an attack against Corinth, and the jealous Artimede betrays Vinicius to the anti-Roman authorities, who arrest him. Diaeus, a treacherous Corinthian military commander, threatens to have Vinicius killed unless Hebe agrees to marry him. Callicrates rescues Vinicius, and with the help of Metellus, a Roman general, they attempt to prevent the destruction of Corinth. However, Diaeus discovers Callicrates' plan and has him killed before the peaceful surrender of the city can be accomplished; Lucius Mummius then sets the city aflame. Artimede dies in an attempt to kill Hebe. Vinicius rescues Hebe from Diaeus, and together they make their way to safety"--AFI catalog, 1961-1970
