Londra, aeroporto di Stansted. Una giovane donna russa, Tanya, arrivata insieme al figlio Artiom, viene respinta dai poliziotti dell'immigrazione: ha troppi pochi soldi con sé e nessun recapito in città, dato che il fidanzato, tale Mark, non è venuto a prenderla all'aeroporto come promesso. Mentendo, Tanya dichiara di essere una rifugiata politica e chiede asilo per sé e il figlio. Nell'attesa che la sua domanda venga esaminata (e ci vorrà, le dice l'impiegato, non meno di un anno), Tanya e Artiom vengono portati in una cosiddetta "residenza assegnata": uno squallido appartamentino in un enorme e cadente palazzone grigio a Stonehaven, una piccola località sul mare. Da qui Tanya non può andare via (ci sono poliziotti e telecamere a sorvegliare ogni accesso; non può lavorare (non ha il permesso di soggiorno), né tantomeno tornare a casa, in Russia, quando si rende conto che Mark non ha intenzione di aiutarla in alcun modo. A darle una mano è invece Alfie, giovane gestore di una sala giochi di giorno e impiegato in una sala bingo di sera. L'uomo insegna l'inglese ad Artiom e le fa una corte discreta. Un giorno, Tanya viene contattata da uno strano personaggio, che le propone di girare video hard; la donna accetta, ma al momento di girare scoppia a piangere. Mentre la relazione tra lei e Alfie sembra farsi più seria, Artiom conosce un gruppo di ragazzini e passa il suo tempo con loro, tra alcol, sigarette e piccoli furti. L'uomo dei video torna a contattare Tanya; la donna rifiuta di tornare a lavorare per lui, ma Alfie intuisce di che cosa si tratta e ne è amareggiato. Anche Artiom è deluso, tanto da prendersi la prima sbronza della sua vita. Nonostante la delusione, Alfie promette a Tanya di aiutarla a scappare da Stonehaven: i tre riescono a fuggire a bordo di una barca. Nonostante l'affetto che ormai lo lega alla donna e al bambino, Alfie capisce che Tanya deve tornare a casa per ricominciare: i tre si salutano lungo l'autostrada, dove un camionista accetta di dar loro un passaggio fino a Londra
