A STUDY OF PLASMA TURBULENCE( Book )

This report summarizes results of a three-year program of experimental and theoretical research to investigate turbulence in collisionless plasmas. The quasi-linear theory of plasma turbulence is extended to include the effect of resonant and nonresonant mode-coupling terms. The theory, originally done in the time domain, is applied to the case of spatially growing waves. The generation of electromagnetic radiation at twice the plasma frequency and microwave scattering from plasma turbulence are investigated theoretically. The kinetic theory of unstable plasmas is systematically developed. A measurement of the Landau damping of electrostatic plasma waves is described. The results agree in detail with the predictions of the theory. The growth of unstable plasma waves due to a gentle bump on the velocity distribution function is measured. The termination of the growth, due to nonlinear effects, (i.e., the diffusion of particles in the velocity distribution function by the electric fields of the wave) is observed. These results are also in quantitative agreement with the theory. This report contains the full text of eighteen scientific papers resulting from this research program. The research program includes both ongoing experiments and theory on transport in pure electron plasmas; and the design, construction and operation of a new pure ion plasma apparatus. Recent experiments on the electron apparatus have elucidated the transport and turbulence associated with diocotron instabilities and vortex structures, and have measured the vortex pairing instability in detail. Recent theory work has analyzed the newly observed diocotron instability, analyzed negative temperature 2D thermal equilibria, and investigated the crystalline equilibria of cold ion clusters. The characteristics of the new ion apparatus have been determined, the major components have been designed, and purchasing and construction is underway. (jhd)

Plasmas are the central element in many physical systems, including devices to generate radiation or high tensity beams of particles. Plasma effects are important in modern high current accelerator concepts, especially collective effect accelerators. They are central to the thermonuclear reactor problem, and of course outdoor plasmas dominate the physics of a large portion of the known universe. The physics of these systems can be very complex, and most of the devious ways by which plasmas manage to cross magnetic fields are not yet well understood. The research seeks to obtain tests of plasma theory under the simplest possible circumstances, and when the theory is inadequate, to develop it further. The ultimate motivation of the work has been to improve our understanding for application to a variety of physical systems. The direction for the program has been determined by the apparatus and by the internal logic of the science which we are attempting to expand.
