In uno sperduto caffé lungo la route 66, un ragazzo e una ragazza stanno facendo colazione. La ragazza è oggetto dell'attenzione di alcuni avventori che scherzano pesantemente con lei. All'improvviso, l'uomo e la donna tirano fuori delle armi e uccidono tutti i presenti, tranne un uomo a cui affidano il compito di dire a tutti che il massacro è opera di Mickey e Mallory. I due sono infatti una coppia di killer che vaga lungo le highway americane compiendo massacri, uccidendo a caso o ispirati dalla situazione. Sono innamorati e fuggono da una vita dura e senza futuro (Mickey ha visto il padre suicidarsi) e da una famiglia oppressiva e crudele (Mallory è stata violentata per anni dal padre). Sulle tracce dei due c'è il detective Jack Scagnetti, che li insegue lungo il deserto, dove la coppia trova asilo presso un indiano del luogo, che li accoglie. Mickey però, durante la notte, viene colto da incubi e lo uccide per errore. I due, durante la fuga, vengono entrambi morsi da dei serpenti a sonagli. Cercano un antidoto e, giunti in una farmacia, sono catturati da Scagnetti dopo un lungo scontro a fuoco. Wayne Gale, un giornalista televisivo, segue da vicino la loro storia, trasformando Mickey e Mallory in vere e proprie star mediatiche. Un anno dopo l'arresto, Wayne Gale ottiene il permesso dal direttore del carcere McClusky di poter intervistare Mickey proprio qualche ora prima che venga lobotomizzato. Scoppia una rivolta nella prigione, e Mickey allora distrae i poliziotti e li elimina tutti, risparmiando la troupe televisiva che continua le riprese. Mickey libera Mallory, rinchiusa in un piano differente, e uccide Scagnetti. Durante la rivolta dei carcerati, Mickey e Mallory riescono ad evadere dal penitenziario prendendo in ostaggio anche Wayne Gale che continua a trasmettere tutto in diretta televisiva. Una volta all'esterno, Mickey decide di uccidere Wayne. L'uomo lo supplica di risparmiarlo, ma Mickey, sempre sotto lo sguardo delle telecamere, non desiste dal s uo intento e lo uccide non prima di aver spiegato che "Ô come Frankenstein che uccide il dottor Frankenstein". L'ultima scena del film mostra Mickey e Mallory con i propri figli, che viaggiano su un autostrada statunitense a bordo di un camper
