One night, Jōji, the owner of a small harbor restaurant, gives shelter to a young woman named Saeko, a singer in a cabaret, who is running away from the cabaret owner's younger brother, who tried to rape her. Jōji lets her work in his restaurant, and soon an attraction grows between them. But Jōji is haunted by the memory of accidentally kiliing a man in a fight. For the past year he has been waiting for his elder brother to return from Brazil and take Jōji back with him, so he can forget his past and start a new life. Strangely, all Jōji's letters have been sent back unopened, but he cannot accept that his brother may have betrayed him. Finally he learns that his brother never went to Brazil, that he was, in fact, murdered by the owner of the cabaret where Saeko had been working
