Montezuma : Oper in drei Akten by Karl Heinrich Graun( Visual )

2 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in German and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Carl Heinrich Graun (1704-1759) wrote a total of 27 operas for the Berlin court and not least for Frederick II. In 1742 his "Cleopatra e Cesare" was performed at the opening of the "Haus Unter den Linden", and in 1755 he wrote his most impressive work - "Montezuma". The opera tells the tragic story of the last ruler of the Aztecs, who lost his power and ultimately his life to the Spanish conquistadores. The libretto, in French prose, was written by none other than the Emperor of Prussia himself - Frederick II - and translated into Italian verse by his court poet

The oratorio comprises four parts, corresponding to spring, summer, autumn and winter; with arias recitatives and choruses. It describes the course of nature during the year from the point of view of country folk, their farming activities, their joys and fears of the weather, along with their lives in the village community
Montezuma by Karl Heinrich Graun( Visual )

1 edition published in 2012 in German and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As the last great Aztec ruler, Montezuma II inherited a sprawling yet fragile empire. This program studies his governance, its abrupt end at the hands of the conquistadors, and its historical meanings. Paralleling a major exhibition at the British Museum, the film features artifacts, architecture, and images that speak to Montezuma's humanity, his self-proclaimed divinity, and the cultural context in which he ruled. These include depictions from the Florentine Codex, the Templo Mayor disk depicting Coyolxauhqui, and the public works of Malinaco, Teotihuacan, and other locations. Analysis of Montezuma's face-off with Hernán Cortés reveals an agile strategist whose brutality was eclipsed only by that of the invaders."--Container
