Unteroffizier Beckmann kehrt 1945 von Stalingrad nach Hamburg zurück. Seinen kleinen Sohn hat er verloren, und seine Frau hat mittlerweile einen anderen. Beckmann will sich in der Elbe ertränken, die ihn aber wieder ausspuckt. Eine junge Frau nimmt ihn mit nach Hause. Dort erscheint ihm ein Einbeiniger, dessen Vorgesetzter Beckmann vor Stalingrad gewesen war. Die Kriegserinnerungen überwältigen Beckmann. Surreale Traumbilder mischen sich mit konkreten Erfahrungen. Die Grenzen der Einbildung und Realität verschwimmen. Beckmann spricht daraufhin bei seinem ehemaligen Vorgesetzten, einem Oberst, vor und will die ihm übertragene Verantwortung zurückgeben. Von einer Nachbarin erfährt Beckmann, daß seine Eltern aus Angst vor Konsequenzen ihres Eintretens für die Nationalsozialisten Selbstmord begangen haben. Nichts bleibt ihm. Im Traum passieren die Figuren des Stücks noch einmal Revue. Beckmann steht alleine mit seiner verzweifelten Frage: "Gibt denn keine Antwort?"
