Phage nanobiotechnology by V. A Petrenko( )

12 editions published in 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,059 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Several books and many papers have been published during the last decade on the design and the use of new nanomaterials in medicine and technology, which describe major concepts of nanotechnology. Meanwhile, a new promising type of nanomaterials-bacteriophages-emerged recently as a result of the evolution of phage display technique. Bacteriophages have a unique feature - completely the opposite of other nanomaterials -their structure and function are encrypted in their genomic DNA, which can be intentionally modified or even rewritten using routine genetic engineering techniques. In particular, a paradigm of landscape phage with multivalently displayed foreign peptides evolved, which allows constructing phage with unique surface architectures and emerged properties. Recently, phage, as a new kind of nanomaterials attracted the attention of specialists working in peripheral, and even very diverse areas from genetics and molecular biology, such as pharmaceutical science, material science, microelectronics, biosensors, detection, environmental sciences, etc. Penetration of the phage technology into these new disciplines required the development of a new instructive concept, which resulted in this publication. This comprehensive book, of value to researchers as well as scientists, introduces readers into this hot new area of phage nanobiotechnology. It summarises the existing data on the phage nanomaterials and discusses their use in different areas of medicine, science and technology. With contributions by top level experts and pioneers in phage display, the major goal of this book is to bring the phage display technique closer to specialists in these diverse areas of medicine, science and technology, where phage-derived nanomaterials can be most beneficial
The variation and adaptive expression of antibodies by George P Smith( Book )

12 editions published between 1971 and 2014 in English and German and held by 400 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the past ten years, several theories have been proposed on the origin of the diversity of antibodies. George P. Smith presents a critical study of these theories in this detailed treatment of immunological problems from the point of view of molecular genetics. Mr. Smith uses a new and simplifying approach to this long-standing controversy. By a comprehensive computerized analysis of antibody amino acid sequences (particularly the myeloma proteins), the author traces their evolution and matches his results against the expectations of the various theories of diversity. He discusses at length the other types of evidence as well. Mr. Smith also deals with the clonal specialization of cells to produce a single antibody, and the relationship of this specialization to the somatic joining of antibody half-genes, which is one of the immune system's most important peculiarities. Introductory material is provided to make this work understandable to molecular geneticists not versed in immunology and to immunologists not versed in molecular genetics. This is a timely book offering a succinct and coherent summary of the various lines of evidence in a confused and controversial field
Palliative care and end-of-life decisions by George P Smith( )

7 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"George P. Smith's Palliative Care and End-of-Life Decisions completes a Bioethics-Health Care epistemology begun in 1989, which addresses the specific issue of managing palliative care at the end-stage of life. Smith argues forcefully that in order to palliate the whole person (encompassing physical and psychological states), an ethic of adjusted care requires recognition of a fundamental right to avoid cruel and unusual suffering from terminal illness. Specifically, this book urges wider consideration and use of terminal sedation as efficacious medical care and as a reasonable procedure in order to safeguard a 'right' to a dignified death. The principle of medical futility is seen as a proper construct for implementing this process. The state legislative responses of California, Vermont, and Washington in enacting Death with Dignity legislation - allowing those with end-stage terminal illness to receive pharmacological assistance in ending their own lives - is held by Smith to be not only commendable, but the proper response for enlightened state action."--Résumé de l'éditeur
In vitro and in vivo approaches to tumor targeting by phage display by William Donald Thomas( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Approximately 30% of breast cancers are linked with the over-expression of ErbB2. Because of its critical role in signal transduction, the progression of breast cancer and its localization on the surface of several types of cancer cells, ErbB2 is a commonly used as a target for the search for protein and peptide ligands that may be useful as therapeutic and diagnostic agents for treating and imaging cancer. In the work described here, I used several commonly used in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo phage display techniques and binding assays in an attempt to discover such peptides. This work lead to the discovery a phage mutant which interferes with the usage of the phage display libraries of the type used during this research. In addition, I also report the results of a quantitative assessment of a new enzymatically releasable phage construct
