Shakepeare's cynical play about money, its virtues, and its vices depicts the transformation of a noble Athenian from a reckless spendthrift to a mad misanthrope. Timon, famously generous and wildly extravagant with his inheritance, is well known for his largesse, which is frequently exploited by sycophants, parasites, and corrupt hangers-on who seek to benefit from his fortunes. When Timon discovers that his munificence has left him deep in debt and unable to pay his creditors, his former fawning "friends" abandon him. Cursing mankind, the disillusioned and disgusted Timon leaves Athens for the wilderness, retreating to a cave where he rails against humanity and becomes a misanthropic hermit
