El Greco and Modernism( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 234 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The sensational oeuvre of El Greco (1541-1614) was first introduced to a broader German audience in 1910 through Julius Meier-Graefe's journal, "The Spanish Journey". Numerous artists subsequently caught "Greco fever" when they first saw larger groups of his works in exhibitions in Munich in 1911 and Düsseldorf in 1912. Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Max Oppenheimer, Ludwig Meidner, and especially members of the Blaue Reiter-August Macke, Franz Marc, Albert Bloch, and others-recognized in El Greco a father figure for the Modernist movement, mentioning him in the same breath as Paul Cézanne. This volume presents a general selection of over forty paintings by El Greco from the most famous museums around the world. At the same time, the young artists' exploration of the paintings and visual spheres of the exceptional Spanish painter are discussed, opening up a fascinating view of the battle for Modernism. Monochrome : painting in black and white by Lelia Packer( Book )

6 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 234 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Painting 'without color' has long held a fascination for artists and in this striking and original book, the authors explore how and why artists throughout the centuries have chosen to paint in black, white and shades of gray. Sometimes painters used trompe l'oeil monochromatic effects to imitate other media, such as sculpture, printmaking or photography; others have consciously limited their palette as a means of re-focusing the viewer's attention, while modern and contemporary artists such as Cy Twombly and Gerhard Richter have often found inspiration in pushing black and white to its limits, and in new directions. The authors trace the history of this art form, from the symbolism of sacred images in medieval church ritual to the abstract canvases of the modern era"--Back cover

August 2014] by Stiftung Museum Kunstpalast (Düsseldorf)( Book )

9 editions published in 2014 in German and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nam June Paik by Nam June Paik( Book )

10 editions published in 2010 in English and German and held by 88 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nam June Paik (1932-2006) was one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century, whose influence is still felt in music, the visual arts, film and video. Born in South Korea, Paik began his career as a composer in Japan and in Germany, where he met Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage and collaborated with Joseph Beuys. Moving to New York in 1964, he formed relationships with a number of artists associated with the Fluxus group, particularly the cellist Charlotte Moorman, who became one of his closest collaborators. He continued to experiment in performance and video art, using manipulated televisions as elements in sculptural works, creating robot sculptures and installations. An international range of contributors trace the course of Paik's life and career, exploring his connections with key figures in the twentieth-century avant-garde, his theoretical writings and his lasting influence. Extensively illustrated, with extracts from interviews and reminiscences from many who were close to Paik during his lifetime, this will be the most thorough and illuminating exploration of Paik's legacy yet published

7 editions published in 2008 in German and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Frauke Dannert : collage by Frauke Dannert( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in English and German and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Artists who create collages appropriate existing images and assemble them in new ways without being bound to a style or a medium. Frauke Dannert (b. Herdecke, 1979; lives and works in Cologne and Düsseldorf) has dedicated herself to this technique. Over the course of a decade, she has built a considerable repertoire of forms she now variously applies in works on paper, wall paintings, projections, films, and photographs. Architecture is the basic material and subject of the collages in which she explores questions of perception as well as orientation and recollection. She dismantles structures to examine their sculptural potential. Drawing on a personal archive of found pictures and her own photographs, she selects jutties, spires, ribbon windows, or entire façades, makes multiple photocopies, and alters dimensions and proportions. Out of the resulting elements she then pieces together weightless structures with a futuristic air. Gunda Luyken, Jari Ortwig, and Eveline Suter contributed essays to Frauke Dannert?s first monograph. Exhibition: Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, Germany (25.03. - 03.07.2016)
