A condensed, simplified version of the play. Bassanio wishes to marry the beautiful, wealthy heiress, Portia. Without the funds to qualify as a suitor, he appeals to his friend Antonio, a wealthy merchant of Venice. Antonio agrees, but at the moment has no ready cash. He promises to cover a bond for Bassanio, who turns to the Jewish moneylender Shylock and names Antonio as the loan's guarantor. Shylock is reluctant to grant the loan, citing abuse he has suffered at Antonio's hand, but finally agrees, upon one condition: if Bassanio is unable to repay on the specified date, Shylock may take a pound of Antonio's flesh. Antonio signs the contract, but when the due date arrives, he is unable to pay, his ships having been lost at sea. Bassanio, now married to Portia, hastens to Venice to repay the loan, but Shylock refuses, demanding instead his pound of flesh. They all end up presenting arguments at the court of the Duke of Venice
