"The relevance of epidemiology to mental illness may seem questionable at first glance, especially if one is accustomed to associating this discipline with the control of infectious diseases. The fact is that epidemiology, as the science that studies the factors initiating and controlling the appearance of disease in populations, may be destined to provide much of the information and guidance on which public health authorities of the future will base their approach to the problem of mental illness. After tracing the historical origins of an epidemiology of mental illness, the authors demonstrate its relevance against the background of medical ecology--the interrelation of man and his environment. There follows an analysis of the limitations of current clinical knowledge which, to an important degree, must be the point of departure for fruitful application of epidemiology to the investigation of mass disease. The authors stress the fact that the etiology of mental illness is multifactorial and bring into their discussion some interesting evidence to suggest that mental turmoil or emotional stress is communicable under certain circumstances. The authors believe that epidemiology must now construct "orderly, well-controlled field experiments designed to identify and quantitate, one by one, the various factors that have been advanced as being involved in causality." They set forth a general plan for such a pilot study"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)
