On May 24, 1945, a young man and woman met by chance on the Sukiyabashi bridge in Tokyo at the time of an air raid. They didn't even know each other's names, but promised to meet on the same bridge six months later on November 24 if they were not killed in subsequent bombings. The man, Haruki, went to the bridge, however the woman, Machiko, was not there. She had been forced into an arranged marriage and moved far away to the island of Sado. Haruki eventually learned that Machiko had given birth to a child and he moved to Hokkaido where he took up work on a farm. He met a young Ainu woman named Yumi who, unlike Machiko, was passionate and adventurous. Yumi fell in love with him, even though she was engaged to another. Meanwhile, Machiko asked her husband for a divorce and when he refused she ran away to Hokkaido in search of Haruki. They met again, but were separated by the tenacity of Yumi's feelings for Haruki and Machiko's husband's great anger. Machiko was taken back to Tokyo by her husband. She later obtains a divorce and travels alone to Kyushu. By chance, Haruki learns of this from Machiko's ex-husband and goes to find her in Kyushu where they are reunited as a couple
