A major figure in the early development of the science fiction genre, Page has been closely compared to H.G. Wells, even said to have presaged many of Wells' major works with his own. The Clock That Went Backward sees our heroes on a journey through time and space a concept that has since inspired movie adaptations as diverse as 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure' and of course, Wells' 'The Time Machine'

Thanks him for an article in the New York Sun about his newly published book The great adventure of Panama. "It is so precise and so accurate that I am led to think that the same mind which interpreted the warning of the Momotombo is the same which inspired the article of which I feel greatly the honour." He characterizes the Sun as "the great protector of Panama, the only protector of Panama then and still now."

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Correspondence, 1883-1923, much of it discussing reports or editorials in the New York Sun. Almost all the letters are addressed to Mitchell, with a few addressed to Charles Dana or William Laffan. There are a number from statesmen and public officials, including Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Maurice Francis Egan, William Howard Taft, and many others. A letter from Taft, dated March 27, 1911, discusses the situation in Mexico and the decision to send troops to Texas; it goes into some detail, and encloses supporting material. The collection also includes a certificate of Mitchell's appointment as a knight officer to the Crown of Italy, and a watercolor by Abigail Brown Tompkins, given in memory of Charles Dana
