Franca, una bella ragazza che lavora in una fabbrica, stanca di fare la vita dell'operaia, abbandona il fidanzato, giovane meccanico, per recarsi a Roma dove spera di trovare un amante ricco. Qui conosce Vera, ballerina in una compagnia di guitti del varietà che la presenta al direttore, cav. Martoni. Entrata a far parte della compagnia, Franca ne segue le sorti finché in un piccolo paese vicino a Milano i poveri guitti si trovano all'estremo della miseria. Franca trova due eleganti signori che le offrono un passaggio in macchina e ne approfitta insieme a Vera. A un certo punto la macchina s'arresta e Franca s'allontana con uno dei due damerini ma Vera, che è una ragazza seria, respinge le insistenze dell'altro e se ne va riunendosi al resto della compagnia. A Milano, il cav. Martoni, rimasto senza soubrette, riesce a sostituirla con una timida ragazzina, Margherita, che ottiene un successo insperato. Vera sposerà un bravo giovane, che l'ama. Franca riesce a farsi sposare da un orribile e ricchissimo industriale ma quando riconosce nel direttore del marito il suo ex fidanzato, disperata, si uccide. A Margherita viene offerta una scrittura in una compagnia di prim'ordine ma lei non vorrebbe lasciare Martoni che, invece, con un generoso stratagemma l'obbliga ad accettare
