Das Belvedere präsentiert im Herbst 2014 mit Martin van Meytens d. J. (1695-1770) einen der bedeutendsten europäischen Maler des Barock. Meytens zählte zu den bevorzugten Porträtisten des österreichischen Kaiserhauses unter Maria Theresia und dokumentierte in eindrücklicher Weise einflussreiche Persönlichkeiten jener Zeit. Holländischer Abstammung, in Schweden geboren, entwickelte der Maler während diverser Studienaufenthalte in Frankreich, England und Italien seinen spezifischen, von verschiedenen europäischen Vorbildern beeinflussten Stil, den er später auch zahlreichen Schülern erfolgreich vermittelte. Zunächst zum Miniaturmaler ausgebildet, perfektionierte Meytens über die Jahre die Monumentalmalerei, wobei er dem Porträtfach – mit wenigen Ausnahmen in anderen figürlichen Genres – stets treu blieb.00Exhibition: Österreichische Galerie/Belvedere, Vienna, Austria (18.10.2014-8.2.2015)
