In this PhD thesis, we focus on the design and performance optimization of multi-channel multi-interface wireless mesh networks. To take advantage of the increased capacity in such networks, a number of issues has to be handled properly. The first contribution of this thesis is a novel classification and formal evaluation of different channel and interface assignment strategies. In particular, we focus on connectivity in terms of topology formation, density of connections, and neighbor discovery. Our second contribution presents broadcast algorithms able to handle any of the multi-channel multi-interface assignment strategies. These algorithms guarantee a broadcast packet to be delivered with a minimum probability to all neighbors. The third contribution of this thesis consists in evaluating the network capacity (i.e., throughput) obtained through the different channel and interface assignments schemes. More specifically, we propose three mixed integer linear programming formulations to model the routing and bandwidth sharing constraints in presence of interference. We derive then upper and lower bounds for different MAC strategies. The fourth and last contribution of this thesis is the development of a novel cross-layer routing solution for multi-channel multi-interface mesh networks. In particular, we propose a link-quality aware metric to estimate the residual bandwidth of a link. An on-demand routing protocol selects the routes offering the best throughput. All our contributions are validated through extensive simulations that demonstrate the efficiency of our solutions. In summary, this thesis provide insight into the improvement of multi-channel multi-interface wireless mesh networks, as well as guidelines for network designers in planning efficient deployments

Wireless communication proliferates into nearly each aspect of the human society, driving to the exponential growth in number of permanently connected devices. Powerful smart-phones and tablets, ubiquitous wireless broadband access, and machine-to-machine communications gen- erate volumes of data traffic that were unpredictable few years back. In this novel paradigm, the telecommunication industry has to simultaneously guarantee the economical sustainability of broadband wireless communications and users' quality of experience. Additionally, there is a strong social incentive to reduce the carbon footprint due to mobile communications, which has notably increased in the last decade. In this context, the integration of femtocells in cellular networks is a low-power, low-cost solution to offer high data rates to indoor customers and simultaneously offload the macrocell network. However, the massive and unplanned deployment of femtocell access points and their uncoordinated operations may result in harmful co-channel interference. Moreover, a high number of lightly loaded cells increases the network energy consumption. In this thesis, we investigate the effects of femtocells deployment on the cellular network energy efficiency. Moreover, we look into adaptive mechanisms for femtocell networks as a means to pave the way towards agile and economically viable mobile communications. Our goal is to dynamically match resource demand and offered capacity in order to limit the average power consumption and co-channel interference while guaranteeing quality of service constraints. We take advantage of the unusual communication context of femtocells to propose resource allocation and network management schemes that coordinate the access points activity, power consumption, and coverage. Simulation results show that our proposals improve system energy efficiency and users' performance in both networked and stand-alone femtocell deployment scenarios

In this PhD thesis, we consider heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in which several sensing devices with different characteristics coexist. In contrast to a homogeneous sensor network, in heterogeneous networks different sensors may sense different physical phenomena generating traffic that have different characteristics such as monitoring temperature, pressure, and humidity. Moreover, also information criticality can be heterogeneous. Deployment of nodes also introduces heterogeneity in the network. Depending on the specific application in fact, initial deployment can be random with the result that the distribution of nodes across the playground may be non-homogeneous. In addition to this, other factors such as node death because of energy resource exhaustion, mobility, or generic fault influence the heterogeneity of the distribution of nodes. All these characteristics can be considered as sources of heterogeneity of a WSN. Heterogeneity conditions may evolve during time and space, therefore, the design of a heterogeneous sensor networks requires adaptive mechanisms able to react to different characteristics, which is difficult to achieve. The goal of the thesis is to investigate the problems related to heterogeneity of sources in WSNs to design adaptive MAC methods that are able to take into account heterogeneity variations and are energy-efficient. We focus on two sources of heterogeneity.First, we study the problem of multiple traffic sources with different characteristics and constraints. Providing differentiated Quality of Service (QoS) such as low latency and high delivery ratio in large and multi-hops networks is a challenge due to limited energy resources of nodes. To solve this problem we propose an adaptive MAC protocol based on the asynchronous preamble sampling (PS) approach, a simple energy saving MAC technique, coupled with the idea of using a rendezvous time for data transmission. The proposed protocol (Low-Latency MAC, LA-MAC), is able to ensure efficient message forwarding throughout a multi-hop network thanks to the transmission of bursts. When messages need to be forwarded, each receiver behaves like coordinator to organize efficient transmission of contending senders. The innovation of the proposed protocol comes from combining enriched PS preambles to locally organize data transmission in a collision limited way. Extensive numerical simulations show that LA-MAC outperforms other state-of-the- art protocols in terms of latency, delivery ratio, and energy consumption.The precise evaluation of the energy consumption in large wireless sensor networks that use preamble sampling MAC is difficult. In this thesis, we propose an analytic model for energy evaluation of PS that depends on the instantaneous traffic load of localized regions so that it is independent of the network traffic patterns that can also be heterogeneous. Second, we study dynamic WSNs with density of nodes that varies across space and time. Such networks are characterized by high variability in terms of node densities. Rapid density variation may affect the network state effecting the collision probability and energy consumption of devices. We address the case of dynamic wireless sensor networks in which nodes and/or radio links may appear and disappear over time due to battery exhaustion, node mobility, or network management operations. With the work presented in this thesis we show that it is possible to provide QoS support in dynamic networks using an adaptive Density Aware MAC (DA-MAC) method. The proposed protocol offers a configurable channel sensing phase during which nodes request transmission opportunity in a way that avoids collisions. With DA-MAC, nodes periodically adapt their local protocol parameters to access the channel without collisions depending on local density state. The efficiency of the proposed protocol with respect to other state-of-the-art protocols is shown with extensive numerical simulations

An increasing interest has been observed in Wirless Sensor Network that can be explained by wide range of WSN applications as well as by the challenges involving the constraints of this type of networks. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard has been proposed with the objective of standardizing the physical and MAC layers. In this work, we have firstly proposed an alternative multichannel scheme for the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. It is able to solve the problem of superframe collisions based on a cluster-tree topology approach in which each cluster uses a different channel allowing the reduction of the interference and increased network capacity. We have also difined a novel mechanism for topology construction, channel allocation, and superframe scheduling. Secondly, we have analyzed the impact of different parameters on the medium access control. We have shown the weakness of the medium access method proposed in the standard. For instance, we have observed a decrease in performance when the standard is applied in large networks. Motivated by the analysis and its results we have then proposed auto-adaptive mechanisms for the medium access control. They allow to dynamically adapt the size of the contention window according to the observed traffic conditions. Each coordinator computes the optimal values to avoid deafness. The proposed mechanisms rapidly converge even in the case of bursty traffic

Abstract: "We describe structured video, a general video data model allowing free form annotation, composition, and content-based access to video segments. The structured video abstraction provides an efficient means of organizing and manipulating video data by assigning logical representations to the underlying video streams and their contents. We introduce a video algebra as a means for combining and expressing temporal relations between structured video segments. Key aspects of the model have been implemented as part of the Structured Video System project. The system offers a query based interface for browsing and playback of relevant video segments. The structured video browser uses the logical representation of the video data to provide viewing methods based on the ascribed temporal characteristics of the video. The structured video system provides interesting and diverse ways to efficiently access and manipulate large video collections. Experience from the prototype implementation is reported."

Le multimédia est un domaine existant depuis lontemps mais dont l'importance est accrue grâce à la convergence d'industries comme le cinéma, les télécommunications ou bien les jeux vidéos. Le contenu multimédia repose sur des contenus monomédias et définit des aspects divers dont les principaux sont leur composition spatiale et temporelle. Dans ce cadre, nous proposons le langage TAO qui permet de définir des présentations multimédias. TAO est un langage orienté objet où les objets référencent les données monomédias. Des opérateurs temporels indique la composition de ces objets, selon une sémantique définie à partir de la notion d'intervalle. Le modèle temporel du langage est basé sur les points temporels de ces intervalles et les relations causales pour exprimer leurs liens. La sémantique des programmes TAO (Temporal Algebraic Operators) est donnée par un processus de normalisation et certaines de leurs propriétés sont analysée, comme l'égalité ou l'arrêt. Nous présentons ainsi une machine d'exécution des programmes TAO que nous avons implenté en java en réutilisant un prototype préexistant. Elle est basée sur un jeu d'instructions séquentielles et de sauts. Les programmes TAO sont compilés en contextes d'instructions qui sont gérés par les différents composants de la machine d'exécution

Recently the deployment of the wireless technology changed the landscape of the computer networks. Due to the evolution of the computer technology an user can extend his working environment using the benefit of enlarged area of connection. The flexible management of the mobility permits the user to access different collaboration environments. This thesis considers the problematic of sharing the application displays from the angle of the diversification of the collaboration contexts. Taking into account the large popularity of the X Window System as well as of the remote display system VNC they have been chosen as the basis for our work. In the first part of the thesis we present a system for sharing X applications which provides more flexibility by its interface for input control. This system is based on a X multiplexer designed as an active service using a generic platform and can be loaded dynamically. In the second part of the thesis we transformed the VNC system into a flexible cooperative system. This new system was built around a proxy which can be remotely controlled. The proxy is programmable and can manage different collaboration sessions. Each collaboration session is able to use multiple VNC data streams. The openes of the system permits different input control policies and thus adaptation to the collaboration context. Finally new perspectives concerning the discovery of the collaboration possibilities in any computer network are presented

Afin d'offrir un ensemble de services génériques et extensibles, nous avons utilisé l'implémentation ouverte, la programmation par aspects et les schémas de conception. Cette thèse est dédiée à l'étude de la mobilité et de la qualité de service (QoS) sur les réseaux locaux sans-fil (WLANs). Nous affirmons que plusieurs conditions doivent être satisfaites afin de pouvoir donner des garanties de QoS sur des réseaux locaux sans-fil. Nous proposons que les WLANs adoptent un modèle de QoS basé sur des garanties statistiques, tel que le modèle Diffserv de l'IETF. Le protocole Mobile IP, ainsi que d'autres mécanismes de gestion de la mobilité ne sont pas adaptés pour gérer la mobilité dans des régions limités géographiquement. Pour cela, nous proposons une approche basée sur le modèle de la micro-mobilité pour assurer la gestion de la mobilité. De même, nous proposons une architecture qui intègre la gestion de la mobilité et de la QoS. Il s'agit d'une architecture hiérarchique qui couple notre protocole de mobilité avec un protocole de signalisation dans la bande (in-band) qui permet la gestion de la QoS. Le mémoire présente d'abord l'état de l'art des domaines des WLANs, l mobilité IP, et la QoS sur IP. Ensuite, nous présentons et discutons nos propositions pour la gestion de la QoS et de la mobilité sur les réseaux locaux. De même, nous présentons l'implémentation de prototypes de nos propositions et l'évaluation de leurs performances. Nous concluons par la présentation de nos contributions et des perspectives envisagées
