The diary of Caroline Marsh, wife of George Marsh, the American ambassador to Italy from 1861 to 1882. An open and generous woman, an admirer of both Garibaldi and Vittorio Emanuele II, a passionate supporter of Lincoln during the American Civil War, Marsh reported on the people and events around her. She was fascinated by local customs, curious about new things, and annoyed by what she believed were unnecessary rules and impossible restrictions of etiquette. Her account of public and private life, continually alternating between the domestic and the official sphere, is extraordinarily rich in curious and unexpected events. From meetings with patriots and authors to lavish royal banquets, from balls in the salons of Turin's nobility to friendships with servants, from the search for a house to rent to vacations in the mountains and in Genua, Marsh's diary bears witness to the cultural and political life of Italy and Turin, 1861-1865
