L'essor de l'informatique et des techniques d'intelligence artificielle a conduit ces dernières années à un développement sans précédent des procédés d'optimisation automatique qui peuvent aujourd'hui prendre en compte des dizaines de paramètres de conception. En particulier, les méthodes évolutionnistes ont connu depuis le début des années soixante une croissance exponentielle et s'affirment peu à peu comme les techniques les plus robustes : d'une part, elles permettent de localiser l'optimum d'une fonction dans l'espace des paramètres sans avoir recours aux dérivées de la fonction par rapport à ces paramètres ; d'autre part elles ne se laissent pas piéger par un optimum local et réussissent le plus souvent à déterminer l'optimum global de la fonction considérée. Cependant, la traduction d'un problème d'optimisation réel avec tous ses aspects (performance pure mais aussi sensibilité, facilité de fabrication, prix de revient, ) sous forme d'une fonction à optimiser n'est pas toujours une chose simple. Dès lors, le concepteur apprécie lorsqu'il étudie l'un des aspects d'être conduit à plusieurs possibilités (plus ou moins parfaites suivant cet aspect là) plutôt qu'à une solution unique. Les méthodes génétiques multimodales ou méthodes de nichage offrent des perspectives intéressantes en permettant la localisation de solutions optimales multiples, aussi bien locales que globales. Notre travail est centré sur la caractérisation de ces nouvelles techniques d'optimisation numérique. Chaque méthode a été testée de façon classique à partir de fonctions mathématiques ainsi que sur des problèmes d'électromagnétisme et sur un procédé très original de conception de formes optimales d'électrodes. Nous décrivons une nouvelle approche pour des systèmes 2D-plan ou axisymétriques, où la forme de l'électrode est identifiée à une ligne équipotentielle obtenue par optimisation du positionnement et de la valeur d'un certain nombre de charges fictives

Within a globalized market context, the classical trial-and-error design process is no longer capable of answering to the ever-growing demands in terms of short deadlines, reduced production costs, etc. The optimization tool presents itself as an answer to these issues, accompanying the engineers in the optimal design task.The focus of this thesis is centered on the optimal design of complex systems. Two main optimization approaches are addressed within this work: the metamodel-based design optimization and the decomposition-based complex systems optimal design.The use of computer-aided design/engineering (CAD/CAE) software has become a regular practice in the engineering design process. The metamodel-based optimization approach is intended to address the optimization of devices represented by such accurate but computationally expensive simulation models, as the finite element analysis (FEA) in electromagnetics.Engineering systems such as railway traction systems are too complex to be addressed as a whole. The decomposition-based optimization strategies are intended to address the optimal design of such systems. The decomposition of such systems is required in order to simplify the problem and to distribute the computational burden across the decomposed structure. Appropriate multi-level strategies have been identified and analyzed within this work. Such approaches allow each team of specialists to work independently at the object of their expertise.The optimization approaches developed within this work are applied for solving several electromagnetic optimization problems and a railway traction system optimal design problem of the Alstom Company

In France, there are two traction modes for railway: the diesel and electric traction. Each mode has its own issues. For diesel, the increasing control of the greenhouse gas emissions imposes to evolve this type of train to a less polluting solution. For electric traction, the energy consumption creates a voltage drop which can cause a traffic slowdown, which will limit the traffic development. The studied solution by SNCF is the hybridization of the train (adding storage system).Thus, these works have the objective to build a method to do the pre-sizing of storage systems embedded in trains. Moreover, to take into account the mutual influence of the sizing and the energy management, this last one is included in the sizing model. An optimization algorithm solves the global model.The method has been developed for the two traction modes (diesel and electric) and the optimization has been made with SQP algorithm (Sequential Quadratic Programming)

Mostly responsible for climate change, the energy sector is particularly targeted and energy transition policies are emerging, based on the principles of sobriety, efficiency and low-carbon energy production. Energy systems need to adapt quickly to these changes and be designed to consider a multi-energy approach and demand-side management strategies. In this context, this thesis proposes to develop a methodology and an associated decision support tool OMEGAlpes, offering the different energy actors an aid to design, size, and manage energy systems at the district level. First, an optimal energy planning approach will be developed. A methodology, based on power balances will then be presented, to treat generically study cases about energy planning at the district scale, and then illustrated on a case of wasted heat recycling. Consumption models based on statistical approaches will then be used to represent temporal flexibility scenarios (load shifting). An alternative to this data approach, based on the physical modeling of buildings, will then be presented through the use of reduced thermal models. Finally, all of these models will be capitalized within an automatic generation tool for optimization models, based on a methodology for building energy models from generic elements. The development of this open source tool, in Python language, and the principle of automatic generation of models will finally be detailed

This Ph.D. dissertation presents a multidisciplinary optimum design methodology to permanent magnet synchronous generators applied to wind power. Such a methodology considers the electrical, the geometrical, the thermal, the electronic, the mechanical and the economical behaviors of the wind turbine. The wind occurrence curve, modelled by a statistical density function, is also take into account by the proposed design methodology. Considering this curve in the optimal design allows to calculate the amount of energy produced by the wind turbine, which operates under variable speed and power by the influence of the actual wind speed. The proposal of using the optimization in the design is to enhances the competitiveness of wind power by designing a generator with a good relation between its cost and its capacity to generate energy. Several studies are addressed to electrical machines optimum design related to wind power, however, few have presented a method able to estimate the wind turbine energy generation, which is mandatory to obtain a cost-effective generator. Further, the electric generator in-depth multidisciplinary aspects have been considered by the proposed method in more detail than other studies found in literature. Take into consideration all these aspects results in a large optimization problem that has approximately 2000 variables, among which approximately 250 have constraints imposed on. A deterministic optimization algorithm has been chosen to deal with this problem. Such an algorithm is capable of finding the solution within few iterations and a short time thanks to the computation of the Jacobean matrix, containing the exact gradients of the model (used to describe the wind turbine behavior) outputs. The presented results explore the proposed methodology potential. The first optimal design performed minimizes the generator active material cost, presenting a significant cost reduction compared to a non-optimal generator. Next, the contradiction between the generator cost and its efficiency is analyzed and the importance of including the wind turbine energy generation into the generator design becomes evident. Using the estimated wind turbine generated energy, the generator with maximum net earnings (equal to the wind turbine energy proceeds less the generator cost) has been obtained. This generator has a good ratio between its cost and capability to generate energy. Then, sensibility analysis have been carried out to verify how the electricity price and the annual mean wind speed influence the design. Finally, two wind turbines with different diameters and rated wind speeds have been employed, considering three distinct wind profiles. These results provide the generators more suited to each wind turbine applied to each wind profile, showing that the proposed design methodology has the ability to helps choosing the wind turbine adequate to each wind farm

The power supply quality of a railway network can be strongly affected by the unavailability of electrical equipment, whether due to a technical incident or a maintenance operation. It is then necessary to reduce the expected traffic by adjusting the time schedules and speed profiles, while maintaining optimal operating performance. The purpose of the work presented in this thesis is to develop a decision support tool to assist the agents in charge of the reorganization of traffic during an incident on electrical infrastructure. The studied system is complex and its analysis is based on costly simulations. We therefore proposed a two-phase approach. As a first step, a sensitivity analysis can effectively detect the most influential traffic adjustment variables. After a comparative analysis between different techniques, we selected the regional sensitivity analysis by Monte Carlo filtering and KS test, because it allows us to take into account the operational constraints, like the tension levels in line. The second phase consists in optimizing the solution by working in a small research area. A set of Pareto-Optimal solutions are generated to evaluate the best trade-off between the main criterion "traffic density" and other criteria such as losses or overheating. The techniques implemented led to the production of a prototype. The tool allows the engineer to define traffic adjustment variables and traffic performance criteria. Then it analyzes the influence of the various adjustment variables and optimizes the traffic according to the defined criteria. The tool was tested on four case studies proposed by SNCF Réseau and corresponding to network segments and actual rail traffic

With the introduction of different environmental standards like ISO 14001, concerns of manufacturers in railway industry are more and more oriented to the design of green products. One important issue when designing such products is the control of the cost impact and the evaluation of the price which consumers agree to pay for a reduced environmental footprint.Eco-design of railway train presents several challenges for the designer. The first one is the complexity of the life cycle analysis of such components. The second challenge is the necessity of consideration of several environmental impacts in design stage given the number of impacts. Finally, railway components have different models with different granularity which can be used in the process of eco-design. To overcome these problems we propose in this work a method which involves two steps. The first one is to simplify the LCA of the railway train using environmental management software and take the opportunity to build a malleable model to calculate eleven impacts. The second step, is to aggregate these impacts for a single indicator which is considered later as environmental criterion in the eco-design process. In order to investigate optimization tools, the eco-design problem is expressed into an optimization problem. Optimization algorithms are able to solve this problem and to find the optimal set of compromises between environmental criterion and the cost of the railway product. The set of compromises is given as a graph called the Pareto front. In our work the cost is expressed by the mass of the component and some optimization algorithms have been adapted in this work to serve in the process of eco-design

Lorsqu'un concepteur de systèmes d'électronique de puissance est engagé dans un processus de pré-design, c'est-à-dire la définition du cahier des charges du système, il doit surmonter plusieurs difficultés. La première étant de trouver grâce à son expérience et à la littérature, toutes les architectures, topologies de conversion et technologies de composants susceptibles de répondre aux besoins du système.A partir de cette éventail, le concepteur doit en éliminer un certain nombre via des arguments qualitatifs ou quantitatifs jusqu'à ce qu'il n'en reste plus qu'un nombre très restreint. Il est primordial pour le concepteur que parmi les choix restant, celui-ci en connaisse les limites de design pour définir avec certitude le plan de développement du produit et les problématiques futures à résoudre. En d'autres termes, il lui faut définir la juste formulation du problème qui lui est posée.Posséder une méthode lui permettant d'atteindre cet objectif en toute confiance et dans les délais impartis est fortement désirable. Ceci est l'objet de cette thèse.Nous proposons donc une nouvelle approche basée sur le pré-dimensionnement par optimisation dans le monde continu (imaginaire) de systèmes d'électronique de puissance. La méthode proposée utilise en effet un algorithme d'optimisation basé sur le calcul du gradient du modèle du système. Cet algorithme permet de gérer un très grand nombre de paramètres de design, autrement dit permet d'explorer un large éventail de solutions dans le monde imaginaire. Il nécessite donc des modèles de systèmes d'électronique de puissance continus et dérivables avec des variables d'optimisation continues (imaginaires) malgré le caractère discret des composants utilisés en électronique.Les présents travaux de thèse ont donc consistés à proposer des modèles d'optimisation continus et dérivables d'un convertisseur Buck entrelacé utilisé dans un aéronef appelé « Stratobus » et à valider ces modèles d'optimisation par une démarche expérimentale sur un prototype complet. Ces modèles ont ensuite été utilisés pour le pré-dimensionnement de ce convertisseur dans le cadre du projet Stratobus permettant dans un premier temps une étude sur le mode de conduction et les matériaux magnétique minimisant la masse du convertisseur, puis une analyse de l'impact de variation de cahier des charges sur la masse du convertisseur. Enfin, les convertisseurs étant construits à partir de composants électroniques choisis sur étagère, une procédure de discrétisation a été mise en place pour revenir au monde réel

In order to reduce the energy consumption and to increase the use of renewable energy, the optimal design of future buildings (smart-buildings) appears as an important factor.This thesis aims to develop models, innovative methods aiding decision-making during the design of buildings. Our approach of design is a global and simultaneous optimization of envelope, energy systems and their management strategies from the sketch phase, which takes into account multi-criterions of costs (investment et exploitation) and comforts (thermal, visual, aeraulic). The multi-objective optimization problem is so a strong coupling problem of large scale with a lot of variables and constraints, which leads to difficulties to solve.After the tests, an optimization method of order 1 is chosen in combination with analytical models formally derived automatically. Our methodology is applied to the design of individual houses, especially positive energy houses. The results of this global approach provide important information to designers to help make choices from the preliminary phase of the design process

La locomotive hybride est constituée d'un groupe diesel couplé à des accumulateurs Ni-Cd et des supercondensateurs. Une première phase d'étude selon une approche de « conception séquentielle » a permis, à partir d'une architecture pré définie, de synthétiser une stratégie de gestion d'énergie puis de dimensionner les éléments de la locomotive. Une seconde phase d'étude a consisté à reprendre le problème selon une démarche de conception simultanée, basée sur un modèle systémique dimensionnel couplé à un outil d'optimisation multicritère. Optimal sizing and system management of water pumping and desalination process supplied with intermittent renewable sources by Duc Trung Nguyen( )

This study focuses on systemic design, integrating simultaneously issues of sizing and optimal energy management. The system under study consists of a pumping process including a brackish water desalination system fed by hybrid renewable power sources with minimum electrochemical storage. Such a device belongs to the class of “autonomous systems” supplied by intermittent sources whose power profile has a “given” waveform: “with minimum electrical storage, power has to be converted, stored in water tanks, or wasted following climatic (sun, wind) conditions”. Influence of environment conditions and robustness of the optimization process is then also discussed in this thesis. Both dynamic and quasi static models are implemented for representing the whole system. The device is firstly modeled dynamically by Bond Graph methodology. For faster simulations, which are more suitable for system optimization, a quasi static model is created to be simulated in the Matlab environment. For such systems, given a certain source power, finding optimal operation point at each period consists of a power sharing between all pumping devices: it is a complex process with huge nonlinearities (efficiency vs power curves) and with many constraints as for the limitation of pump powers, tank level conditions, or pressure and flow limitations in hydraulic network and pumping devices. It is not so trivial to define an objective function which ensures system performance and robustness versus environment conditions: a convenient objective function, whatever the input power profile, is then proposed to implement the optimal management. The optimization problem being mathematically expressed, consisting of objective function maximization under constraints, efficient optimization methods by non linear programming are implemented. The issue of sizing and its coupling with system management efficiency is finally studied. In particular, the interest of modular operation with several pumps connected in parallel is also concerned in this research

Les travaux de cette thèse portent sur la méthodologie de conception par optimisation d'une chaine de traction de véhicule électrique en phase amont du développement. Dan une première partie, nous avons abordé le contexte environnemental du transport afin d poser la problématique de la conception systémique d'une chaine de traction électrique composée d'une transmission, une machine électrique asynchrone, un onduleur et un batterie. Le cas test est celui du Renault Twizy. La seconde partie explore les possibilité de modélisation puis détaille les modèles analytiques qui ont été choisis pour chaque composant. L'assemblage de ces modèles permet une estimation de l'autonomie d véhicule, au travers du calcul des pertes des composants, et du cout de la chaine d traction. La troisième partie est consacrée aux méthodes et stratégies d'optimisation afin d pouvoir exploiter le modèle système en incluant le cycle de roulage, le contrôle de l machine électrique et les différentes physiques des composants, tout en conservant de temps de calcul raisonnable. Enfin, la dernière partie présente des résultats d'optimisation en comparant différents jeux de variables et objectifs, soulignant l'importance d'un conception systémique. Des essais sur banc permettent de valider les hypothèses qui on été posées

The benefits of electrical systems compared to other systems (mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic) are a serious motivation for the electrification of embedded systems in “more electric aircraft”. In this framework, the integrated optimal design of these systems appears necessary to meet requirements in terms of efficiency, reliability and weight reduction. In this thesis, we have applied the integrated optimal design to an electromechanical system used in the air conditioning system of a more electric aircraft. Two objectives are targeted: the minimization of the system weight and the increase of its efficiency. Both objectives are integrated with several heterogeneous constraints, from network quality till flight mission fulfilment in the torque vs speed plan. Because of the complexity of the studied system and its multidisciplinary nature, "MDO" approaches (for multidisciplinary Design Optimization) are studied. In fact, beyond physical and technical skills, integrated optimal design of complex systems requires additional efforts in terms of design methodologies. Three approaches are presented in this thesis: One-level Approaches: sequential and global; Multilevel approach, coupling “system” level with “device” level (filter, inverter, electric machine); a set of formulations adapted to our design problem are presented to solve the issues associated to the one-level approaches. The performance of these design approaches are presented, analyzed and compared. The results clearly show the advantages that involves multilevel formulation compared to conventional design approaches

Envisioned in the next 15 to 30 years in the aviation industry, hybrid-electric propulsion offers theopportunity to integrate new technology bricks providing additional degrees of freedom to improveoverall aircraft performance, limit the use of non-renewable fossil resources and reduce the aircraftenvironmental footprint. Today, hybrid-electric technology has mainly been applied to groundbased transports, cars, buses and trains, but also ships. The feasibility in the air industry has to beestablished and the improvement in aircraft performance has still to be demonstrated. This thesisaims to evaluate the energy savings enabled by electric power in the case of a 70-seat regionalaircraft. First, energy saving opportunities are identified from the analysis of the propulsion andaerodynamic efficiencies of a conventional twin turboprop aircraft. The potential benefits comingfrom the variation of the size of prime movers and the new power managements with the use ofbatteries are studied. Also, possible aerodynamic improvements enabled by new propellerintegrations are considered. For each topic, simplified analyses provide estimated potential ofenergy saving. These results are then used to select four electrified propulsion systems that arestudied in more detail in the thesis: a parallel-hybrid, a turboelectric with distributed propulsion, apartial-turboelectric with high-lift propellers and an all-electric. Evaluating the selected hybrid-electric aircraft is even more challenging that the sizing of the different components, the energymanagement strategies and the mission profiles one can imagine are many and varied. Inaddition, the overall aircraft design process and the evaluation tools need to be adaptedaccordingly. The Airbus in-house Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation platform named XMDO,which includes most of the required modifications, is eventually selected and further developedduring the thesis. For examples, new parametric component models (blown wing, electrical motor,gas turbine, propeller, etc...) are created, a generic formulation for solving the propulsion systemequilibrium is implemented, and simulation models for take-off and landing are improved. In orderto evaluate the energy efficiency of the hybrid-electric aircraft, a reference aircraft equipped with aconventional propulsion system is first optimised with XMDO. Different optimisation algorithms aretested, and the consistency of the new design method is checked. Then, all the hybrid-electricconfigurations are optimised under the same aircraft design requirements as the reference. Forthe electrical components, two levels of technology are defined regarding the service entry date ofthe aircraft. The optimisation results for the turboelectric and the partial-turboelectric are used tobetter understand the potential aerodynamic improvements identified in the first part of the thesis.Optimisations for the parallel-hybrid, including different battery recharge scenarios, highlight thebest energy management strategies when batteries are used as secondary energy sources. All theresults are finally compared to the reference in terms of fuel and energy efficiencies, for the twoelectrical technology levels. The last part of the thesis focuses on the all-electric aircraft, and aimsat identifying the minimum specific energy required for batteries as a function of the aircraft designrange. A trade study is also carried-out in accordance with the service entry date for the otherelectrical components
