Boston scrapbook of John T. Prince by John T Prince( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A scrapbook, likely compiled by John T. Prince, containing news clippings and advertising matter concerning Boston, Mass., dating from 1800 to 1875. The bulk of the material, however, dates from the late 1840's into the 1850's, although internal evidence suggests that it was compiled at a later date. The primary focus of the collection is the developing infrastructure, real estate, and commerce in Boston during this period, and includes several images of buildings and structures. Among the more unusual items is a quire of paper damaged by smoke, upon which a manuscript annotation states that it was taken from the bindery at 112 State Street after the fire of August 28, 1856, and a complete edition of the Boston Evening Transcript for February 9, 1874 in miniature (16 x 12 cm.) with a cover story on the opening of the new Transcript Building at 150 and 152 Washington Street, after the newspaper's old location was damaged in the Great Fire of 1872. Inexplicably, a January 4, 1800 issue of the Ulster County Gazette, published at Kingston [N.Y.] by Samuel Freer and Son is tipped-in at the back paste-down. Boston Athenaeum related material includes an undated (circa 1850?) article on page 73, clipped from an unknown publication, describing the Boston Athenaeum's new building at 10 1/2 Beacon Street, and another article on page 102, clipped from an unknown publication, dated January 19, 1852, concerning Josiah Quincy Jr.'s retiring as Treasurer of the Boston Athenaeum
