At this very moment, a horse pokes its head over the hedge behind them-they are in business. They have found their switch, the living image of Cardinal. A few days before the race, the three friends set up headquarters in a pub and begin to make preparations. But a series of farcical disasters overtake them and they end up by mislaying their horse. Undeterred, Alf seeks the help of an unscrupulous jockey, and when this plan fails, Fred is ordered to ride Cardinal. Cardinal wins the race, but refuses to stop at the post. It is a peaceful day in England 1895, but in the house of Edwina Black, a wealthy invalid and recluse, there is no peace. Sadistic and mean, Edwina rules over her household with a rod of iron. Her husband Gregory, a cultured village schoolmaster, is compelled to fill the role of gardener in a depleted household staff. Her young companion Elizabeth suffers under her mistress's tyrannical rule, but her deep affection for Gregory compels her to remain by his side. The only other member of the household is Ellen, the housekeeper, whose terrible obsession for her mistress turns her into a narrow-minded, bigoted woman, who takes every opportunity of spreading scandal about Gregory and Elizabeth. When Edwina is suddenly taken ill and dies, the malicious whisperings of Ellen attract the attention of the police, and Scotland Yard is called in to investigate Edwina's death. After a post mortem exam has been carried out, and traces of arsenic have been found in the body, the inspector in charge of the case, with three suspects on his hands, begins the long and arduous task of unravelling the mystery. It calls for much finesse and strategy on the part of the police, and the suspense suffered by Gregory and Elizabeth almost breaks up their love. The Inspector, however, successfully tricks the real culprit into a confession and the lovers are cleared of any guilt
