The German troops are entering the Meuse. The alert has been given. The French soldier calmly awaits the shock. All the villages have been evacuated; wives have been torn apart from their husbands, who stay to defend the land the old farmer won't abandon. The German offensive takes place on February 21st, 1916. Following intense bombing from 7:15 am to 5 pm, flocks of German soldiers dash through the bois des Caures. In order to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the end of World War I, Léon Poirier recreated the battle of Verdun and inscribed in history the lives of symbolic characters from both sides of the front. Verdun, looking at history was edited in three distinct parts and is an epic film of great emotional strength dedicated to all the martyrs of the ugliest human passion that is war

"Brazza is the story of the exploration of what will become French Equatorial Africa, the story of a -- literally -- barefoot idealist, French by choice rather than by birth, set on spreading the Republican gospel of civilization, of abolishing slavery, confronting a world of ruffians, (then already rich Anglo-Saxons), a lay missionary perfectly played by Robert Darène. The storyteller is another idealist, Léon Poirier, proud of his sobriquet "The African." A story so full of candour may bring out disbelieving smiles, if not outright anger. It is therefore particularly interesting to listen to the powerful and scathing analysis presented by Eric Deroo, a specialist on colonial history. And, finally, comments by two Batékés who, in spite of their witty and sometimes angry analysis of the film, admit to feeling a measure of respect for the character of Brazza."--Container

The Battle of Verdun was the longest and one of the most devastating of the First World War, lasting from February 21 until December 18, 1916. Planned by the Germans as a crippling battle of French attrition, resistance at Verdun became a symbol of French fortitude. This program plots out the strategies and tactics on both sides as it illustrates what renowned British military historian Major General Julian Thompson calls "France's Stalingrad"--A siege resulting in a quarter of a million battlefield deaths and at least half a million wounded

"Léon Poirier renoue avec la terrible bataille qui opposa Français et Allemands pendant plus de dix mois. Il précise que par rapport au film muet réalisé en 1928, il s'agit d'un nouveau film entièrement sonore et parlé. Les épisodes comme les personnages ne sont plus les mêmes. L'histoire est racontée par le personnage principal de l'ancien combattant." (source : jaquette)
