A planned official film for the XIII Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1980 was never completed. However, Tony Maylam, attracted the support of Coca-Cola for Olympic Spirit. He and his codirector, Drummond Challis, assumed the challenge of making a documentary without any offscreen commentary, relying on music to sustain the flow of images. Athletes are not identified by commentary or on-screen graphics. Swede Ingemar Stenmark dominated the slalom and giant slalom, British figure skater Robin Cousins won the gold in the men's individual event, and the U.S. hockey team won a rare victory over the USSR. The outstanding athlete of the Games proved to be American speed skater Eric Heiden, who hurtled to gold in five different events, the most that any Winter Olympian has won at one edition of the Games, a record unequaled to this day. Yuri Ozerov directed the official film of the Games of the XXII Olympiad Moscow 1980--Games that were dogged by a boycott on the part of the United States and other countries because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. An animated opening sequence explains how, in ancient Greece, sports were relied upon to keep the peace, and throughout the film there are continued animated references to the ancient Olympic Games. Moscow devoted enormous effort to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and Ozerov records them in detail. Ozerov also includes interviews with dignitaries and other commentators about the absence of so many countries on political grounds. Many sports and events are described all too briefly, while the sports in which Soviet athletes have long excelled--gymnastics, wrestling and weight lifting--are highlighted. Ozerov's interviews with individual competitors paved the way for Bud Greenspan to follow suit in later Olympic documentaries
