They join a platoon commanded by a rule-book lieutenant whom Zack despises. The sergeant exemplifies Fuller's experience of war (he was himself a G.I. in World War II) as pure survival. Zack's protective cynicism is broken down by Short Round, bringing out the contradictions in Zack's extreme individualism. Fuller's film is no less authentic by having been shot in ten days on one set with a half day's shooting of exterior action scenes
