The Holy Grail of macroeconomics : lessons from Japan's great recession by Richard Koo( )

45 editions published between 2008 and 2017 in English and Chinese and held by 1,151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"How did the Great Depression of the 1930s get to be so bad for so long? That question has baffled economists for decades." "Building on the author's earlier work, The Holy Grail of Macroeconomics: Lessons from Japan's Great Recession argues that there are actually two phases to an economy, the ordinary (or yang) phase, in which the private sector is maximizing profits, and the post-bubble (or yin) phase, in which private sector is minimizing debt, or repairing damaged balanced sheets. Although conventional economics is useful in analyzing economies in the yang phase, it is less useful in explaining phenomena such as the "liquidity trap" that is typical of an economy in the yin phase. The distinction between the yin and yang phases also explains why some policies work well in some situations but not in others. Indeed, it offers the crucial foundation to macroeconomics that has been missing since the days of Keynes." "This book not only explains what happened to the U.S. during the Great Depression and to Japan during the Great Recession, it also offers important policy recommendations for fighting post-bubble economic downturns in any country, including the current subprime crisis in the U.S."--Jacket
The escape from balance sheet recession and the QE trap : a hazardous road for the world economy by Richard Koo( )

13 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 668 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book aims to warn the readers in the US, UK and Japan about the upcoming dangers of QE trap, which is an unfortunate by-product of balance sheet recessions. This book also spends nearly eighty pages on Euro problems from the perspective of balance sheet recession ... Europeans are still very much in the dark as far as this concept and its implications are concerned. As a result, they are repeating every mistake Japan made during the last two decades ... On Japan, it talks about Abenomics ... and on China, the book introduces a very different historical perspective as to why the country faces the problems it faces and argues that western commentators have forgotten their own history when they were at the same stage of economic development as China is today. This new way of thinking has gotten quite a bit of attention among policy thinkers in China"--Publisher's description
The other half of macroeconomics and the fate of globalization by Richard Koo( )

12 editions published in 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 256 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The failure of the vast majority of economists in government, academia and the private sector to predict either the post-2008 Great Recession or the degree of its severity has raised serious credibility issues for the profession. The repeated failures of central banks and other policymakers in all advanced countries to meet their inflation or growth targets in spite of astronomical monetary easing, have left the public rightfully suspicious of the establishment and its economists. The Other Half of Macroeconomics and the Fate of Globalization elucidates what was missing in economics all along and what changes are needed to make the profession relevant to the economic challenges of today. Once the other half of macroeconomics is understood both as a post-bubble phenomenon and as a phase of post-industrial economies, it should be possible for policy makers to devise appropriate measures to overcome difficulties advanced countries are facing today such as stagnation and income inequality.--
Balance sheet recession : Japan's struggle with uncharted economics and its global implications by Richard Koo( Book )

9 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 253 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this groundbreaking book, leading international economist, Richard Koo argues that far from being the sick man of Asia, Japan is suffering from a temporary but highly unusual economic aberration." "Balance Sheet Recession argues that contrary to popular belief, it is this massive shift in corporate behavior, instead of structural problems, that is the root cause of both the deflation and the non-performing loan problems that have troubled Japan for so long. It argues that when the causality runs from the corporate balance sheet problems to deflation and banking problems, a highly unconventional policy response is needed to stabilize the economy. After all, the last time anything similar has happened was the 1930s in the US."--Jacket
Economic reform now : a global manifesto to rescue our sinking economies by Heiner Flassbeck( Book )

In Economic Reform Now, some of the world's leading economists issue a strong warning on the grave errors that are threatening to force the global economy over the brink. As Europe moves closer to economic disaster, and America fights double-digit unemployment, this is a must-read for policy makers and those concerned with the economy

¡Act©Øuen ya! : Un manifiesto global para recuperar nuestras econom©Øias y salir de la crisis by Paul Davidson( )

1 edition published in 2014 in Spanish and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Checkpointing and rollback recovery for distributed systems by Richard Koo( Book )

3 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We consider the problem of bringing a distributed system to a consistent state after transient failures. We address the two components of this problem by describing a distributed algorithm to create consistent checkpoints, as well as a rollback-recovery algorithm to recover the system to a consistent state. In contrast to previous algorithms, they tolerate failures that occur during their executions. Furthermore, when a process takes a checkpoint, a minimal number of additional processes are forced to take checkpoints. Similarly, when a process rolls back and restarts after a failure, a minimal number of additional processes are forced to roll back with it. Our algorithms require each process to store at most two checkpoints in stable storage. This storage requirement is shown to be minimal under general assumptions

Techniques for simplifying the programming of distributed systems by Richard Koo( Book )

3 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is difficult to design and verify distributed programs that execute correctly despite transient processor failures, or despite variable and unpredictable processor speeds and message transmission times. In this thesis, we describe a checkpointing/rollback mechanism that allows programmers to write distributed programs with the simplifying assumption that processors do not fail, and then run these programs correctly on systems with transient processor failures. We also describe a translation mechanism that can be used to write programs with the simplifying assumptions that processors execute in synchronized steps and messages take exactly one step to arrive, and then run these programs correctly on systems that violate these assumptions. Both mechanisms are transparent to the programmer, and they can be applied to solve a large class of problems
