When Dan Shechtman became a full professor at Technion in 1986 and initiated a new class on technological entrepreneurship, the word "start up"--Which became a mantra after the dot-com boom - was not that fashionable yet. Even today, entrepreneurship education is not fully explored in business schools, where students rather learn about maintaining a company than about bringing a good idea to a profitable realization. From today's perspective, it is not surprising that Shechtman's unique program became one of the most attended courses at Technion and that by now, the class was visited by more than 10,000 engineers and scientists. Shechtman's research as a chemist, which was led mostly during his sabbatical years, opened the new science of quasiperiodic crystals and explored several other subjects, earning him recognitions such as the Wolf Prize in Physics, the Gregori Aminoff Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the EMRS Award and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011. To Dan Shechtman, technological entrepreneurship is more relevant than ever, having turned Israel from a country with scarce natural resources to a powerhouse of innovation. Supersaturated Aluminum Alloy Powders( Book )

Four aluminum alloys, designed for use at elevated temperatures, supersaturated with iron, chromium and other elements: Ti, V, Zr, were studied. The starting materials were alloy powders made by the RSR (Rapid Solidification Rate) centrifugal atomization process (approx. one million (deg C/sec)) developed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and extrusion bars were made from four powders. The as extruded microstructure and the microstructure of the annealed alloys at 482 C (900 F) were investigated by optical and transmission electron microscopy, and by X-ray diffraction. The microstructure included equiaxed grains of aluminum matrix and two types of precipitates, namely: Theta-Al3(Fe, Cr), and Al6(Fe, CR)--which is a metastable phase. The precipitates were different in their shape, size, distribution and location within the grains. The thermal stability of the four alloys was investigated by hardness measurements, following annealing at various temperatures. The alloy structures were found to be stable up to 400 C (750 F). Tensile properties of the alloys were investigated at room temperature, 232 C (450 F) and 332 C (630 F)

The structure of grain boundaries in the diamond lattice, and twin boundaries as a special case, received considerable attention in over thirty years. This is mainly due to the importance of defects in silicon and germanium to their usefulness as efficient semiconductors. Twin boundaries have equal importance to various properties of diamond films. Electrical and mechanical properties as well as migration mechanisms are all affected by the twin boundaries and their structure. The ever presence of twins in CVD diamond films makes their study even more important compared to semiconductors which can be grown without boundaries. The purpose of the study reported here is, therefore, to investigate the crystallography of twin boundaries which form in chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond films, and to compare them to the ones which were found in silicon and in germanium

"Over the years, the modern science of crystallography that started by experimenting with x-ray diffraction from crystals in 1912 has developed a major paradigm: that all crystals are ordered and periodic. Based upon a vast number of experimental data, constantly improving research tools, and deepening theoretical understanding, no revolution was anticipated in our understanding the atomic order of solids. However, such revolution did happen with the discovery, in 1982, of the Icosahedral phase (the first quasi-periodic crystal) by Dr. Shechtman while he was working as a guest researcher at NIST, then NBS. It is clear now that although most crystals are ordered and periodic, a good number of them are ordered and quasi-periodic. Quasi-periodic materials have developed into an exciting interdisciplinary science.
