He goes to Cologne to attend a family baptism, and afterwards is lured to sample the wicked delights of the big city. He wakes up the next morning in a cheap hotel room with no memory of what happened, but there's a strange woman asleep in the bed with him. Horrified, he heads home with his guilty secret. Meanwhile his wife went on the river steamer to the next town; an Italian tenor has been giving her singing lessons and has amorous intentions towards her, and he takes the same steamer. They stay on it to Koblenz and have to stay the night. Käte, Lotte, Franziska, and Marianne all went to the same school of applied arts, and their teacher Stefan Kohlund would have married Marianne on the spot. However, she felt he only wanted a housewife to cater to his needs and she wanted to prove she could do more than that, so she turned him down. Since then, Stefan has become the promotional manager of a big cigarette company in Dresden, as the four women wait in vain for clients. While trying to help her company, the ambitious Marianne goes to the big cigarette company and ends up finding Stefan Kohlund. Stefan proposes again, and Marianne turns him down again. The advertising agency starts doing well, Marianne's friends have each found men they want to spend their lives with, and only Marianne is alone.
